The most important piece in that article: “It had originally been proposed that pornographic services that refused to carry out age checks could be fined up to £250,000. However, this power will not be enforced because ministers believe the threat to block defiant sites will be sufficient and that trying to chase overseas-based entities for payment would have been difficult.”
So, given the choice of going to the newsagent and asking for a porn pass card… or several to cope with the multiple systems, or buying a VPN subscription the question is what will most people do?
With the fine off the table is it calculation about what impact using the verification solution will have on wider traffic or loosing the UK as a market (which will likely be less lucrative) voluntarily or being banned?
Just wait for the next deadline. The British have already proved that they are the most successful nation in delaying of delaying.
Exactly! Blocking sites is at least 6 months away, if I understand things correctly. You’re supposed to start 3 months from now, but my understanding is they’re not going to take any action the first 3 months â it’s a grace period.
The only thing implementing it early will accomplish is a reduction in traffic and customers. You don’t want to make age verification mandatory until October 15th. And a lot can happen between now and then.
Exactly, I sure as hell won’t want to be the first one to try. Once the big tube sites start then maybe.
Interesting that the fine has been removed, what does that mean for all the free sites that don’t use billing providers or need those kind of services? What’s the incentive to do anything? Isn’t there then a risk that many less legal sites will just ignore it and create a unequal situation… where those of us who worry about it and implement age check will just lose out to those who don’t care.
No I think this is it, the official date and guidelines have now been published.
Apparently the penalty will be the UK government asking/requiring UK ISPs to block your IP or domain. So you’ll lose all UK traffic rather than just some/most UK traffic.

Interesting.
I bet the Age Check companies are not happy about that.
I still think it will quietly disappear
tax money hard at work lol
A part of me agrees, there’s just too much going on and this is a scheme that can never actually work. The only thing it will achieve is to dilute the effort to fight genuine illegal content and massively grow the use of VPN services.
Having said that, we’re about to see a takeover of the UK government by increasingly right-wing politicians, and that never works out well for freedom, diversity and rights. Whoever the next Tory PM is, they’re going to be in the pocket of the ERG (anti-European and far-right) cabal and corporate funders, which is likely to severely damage our country even more, and likely usher in a new age of backward politics.
If people thought Theresa May was bad, just wait until we have Bojo the Clown or Jeremy *unt running the country.
All we can really do is hope for the best, but for those who are still running adult businesses in the UK I would genuinely recommend moving out. The UK is not only unstable for adult business, it’s becoming increasingly unstable for all business and there’s no sign that’s going to change in the long or short term.
You are kidding, right? Right-wing politics never worked out well for freedom, diversity and rights? You clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Could you please tell me what makes you think that behind most horrific terrors in human history are ‘right-wing politicians’? Clearly, I wasn’t paying attention at school because as far as I know, it was the exact opposite that started WWI, WWII and millions of people were killed because of Hitler, Stalin and Mao Zedong, but you have also problems to see the difference between anti-European and anti-European Union.
I am pretty sure that survivors of the Holocaust and other socialist experiments would be super happy if you tell them how people were enjoying freedom, diversity and rights when Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong and other communist were in charge. Don’t you have even a little bit of respect for those people?
Yeah we may have made a decission on BREXIT!!!
Should be interesting to see how many from our goverment will be buying a porn pass!!!
Ah, you’re one of those weirdos who thinks Hitler was anything other than far-right. lol
Communist? Give me a fucking break.
Moving on, this is not a discussion worth anyone’s time.
Sure, Sure… Do you know what the origin of ‘Nazism’ is? It’s a shortcut of National Socialism, Nationalsozialismus in German, but I am pretty sure far left-wing will translate it as ‘far-right populism’ right?
Try to educate yourself first next time
