it pays to check wikipedia

we just had to cancel an affiliate account after we found that they had edited our wikipedia pages to insert their tracking in all links there (no other changes, just the links)… As we don’t check the page that often it had gone unnoticed, but the joins from there were not insignificant. So the advice is for everyone to keep an eye on any wikipedia entries you have.

Wow, that’s a new one!

That’s odd. WikiPedia are usually pretty good at monitoring abuse and that’s clearly against their terms. I have read about how some use it to boost their link profile, but that takes months of work and you have to be so careful about it. I never thought it was worth all the mainstream editing you’d have to do to gain trust before being able to make one link relevant to you. Never heard of someone using it for affiliate spamming though!
