Ideal Wordpress Backup Solution

I think I may have found a very good Wordpress blog backup solution for those who don’t have administrative access to the server they are hosted on. iDrive has a Wordpress plugin that totally automates backups, and 5 GB is free. I’m testing it on my blog and it’s working well, even though I can backup my entire cPanel account at the server level this works good for being free.

My blog is way bigger then 5 GB but I’ve told it to exclude my movie clips directory (you can add any file type or directory to it’s exclusion list).

Try it out, it may or may not work for you. It says it also pulls a complete SQL database dump. I think this is an excellent free and automated backup option for those who use multiple cheap hosts for SEO purposes.

Signup for an account though the Wordpress plugin in your WP-admin, it makes you signup though there for blog backups.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve just signed up and it works like a charm!

Re: Ideal Wordpress Backup Solution

I already use their regular windows application, but this is much more convenient for WP. However, when I install it and activate the plugin, press Backup, nothing happens. It just says the backup has started but no files are being backed up…

Re: Ideal Wordpress Backup Solution

Be patient and wait for an hour or two, if it still had not started, I would contact your host and see if something in their hosting environment (security settings) are preventing this from running.

Re: Ideal Wordpress Backup Solution

Easy enough to just set up a shell script that will tar cf the wp-content/ folders, mysqldump the databases, and either download it via ftp/ssh or automate that too. Gay porn of any sort could violate the iDrive terms of service, namely (emphasis added):

any harassing, libelous, abusive, threatening, harmful, unlawfully pornographic, vulgar, obscene, fraudulent, deceptive or otherwise objectionable material of any kind or nature;

any material that encourages conduct that could constitute a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability or otherwise violate any applicable local, state, national or international law or regulation;

So if someone in Fred Phelps’ church might think you’re doing harm, you’ve broken their AUP.
