How insane is this video resolution?

Hello,
what do you think about a 1920x1080 8mbit movie as “extreme resolution” downloadable in the member area? Is it just a waste of bw? Can it increase retainings?

total waste if you ask me… i dont even think the HighDef sites use that size yet ?

Really few straight highdef sites use that sites. Usually they use this insane size to market themselves. It seems to work. Who knows if the same strategy could be used with gay sites too.

Doing some maths it’s 2.4GB for a 40 minutes long video.

i have seen a few str8 programs where all the sites have HD of that size, but i’d consider 5 Mbps before 8 Mbps, and definitely offer smaller resolutions, as well.

whether it will help with retention depends on your members - if they go in expecting that quality, they are more likely to expect that quality. i’d wonder more if it helps with initial sales. the larger programs offering that level of HD don’t seem to sell any better although some of the smaller ones sell very well. whether that is due to the full-on HD or not, it’s hard to know - especially since some also offer a 1280×720 with a bitrate of around 3 Mbps that looks fine on hd tv.

I have been playing around with “Super” HD formats…

1280x720 @ 4,000kbps looks great on a monitor that can support it… but play it on on a 1024 x 768 monitor and it becomes blocky and jagged. Now, how the hell does anyone suggest we try and educate porn surfers that bigger doesn’t always look better, eh?

Seriously, as long as you offer several formats you can offer even 1920x1080 size. Users will choose the format that they can play on their system or/and they can download without waiting for ages. Do you think that users with 800x600 res screen are so stupid to download a 1920x1080 movie and then complain about how bad it is on their monitor? Rhetorical question :grrr:

Absolutey. It’s human nature (these days) for people to assume bigger is better without understanding that it might not be the case.

Even I, as a (relatively!) intelligent producer would have thought that down-scaling a true HD film on to a humble PC monitor wouldn’t make the film look like a POS!

for me it would be a matter of what i want to have occur:
example if its just to get them to buy into vod then i am not concerned with HD big file
But i would want my vod to be best quality that can be delivered across net
and still further if its a DVD authoring job then id want the very best
does that make sens or have i just repeated what all are saying.
My thinking is, is the vids purpose a teaser or not???

since he’s talking about retention, the question is about paysites using videos that size in their member area.

From a personal point of view, I don’t bother with many videos. When I do, they’ re from BlakeMason, MalePerfection, and a few others who take the time to produce extremely high-quality video. Animated postage stamps don’t tickle me at all.

Does it help with retention?

How good are your models - will they hold up well when every freckle, pore, wart and pimple are crisp and clear?

How good was the lighting, and how “clean” was the set - will the techie side hang together under tight scrutiny?

I’ve seen some videos which, looking at the quality of the shoot, should have been rendered way lower than they were and the extra clarity destroyed any erotic quality that might have been there with less realism.
