General question - CMS

I’ve been asked to make a website for someone and think it will be better for them if I put it on a CMS so they can edit the text themselves from time to time.

This is just a mainstream site, not porn related.

Does anyone have a recommendation of any one CMS in particular? Preferably free and open source.

Re: General question - CMS

Joomla maybe? shrug

Re: General question - CMS

joomla does rather come to mind, but you actually might be able to do it in wordpress, which i find easier to use and you can remove pretty much all the stuff that makes a page look like a blog. you can also use linkx, but we found that although it’s incredibly useful, it has quite a learning curve.

Re: General question - CMS

Thanks. I have thought of Joomla but maybe a bit more powerful than needed. Wordpress is a good idea! I would imagine it is a bit simpler for someone to use too. The person the site is for has absolutely no html knowledge but wants to be able to control the content on the pages still.

Re: General question - CMS

can you give a general idea of what sort of things the owner will need to update? that may well affect what we’d recommend.

Re: General question - CMS

Joomla is also not for the casual user who just needs to update text. Joomla has a steep learning curve. I’ve had it up for six months and I’m finally just starting to “get” it.

Joomla is also a resource hog. I would think you’d do better with Wordpress.

Movable Type or Word Press. They are both a type of CMS, its just that most people use them for blogging. You just got to think a bit outside the box to see how they work and how they can work for you.

Re: General question - CMS

I tried running Joomla and gave up on it after 30 minutes - and I am a techie geek LOL!!!

Stick with WordPress, its easy and can be customized to look like almost anything these days.

Re: General question - CMS

I had to hire someone to design the template for my Joomla installation and teach me how to use it. Aren’t you glad I didn’t ask for you help?

Re: General question - CMS

Thanks everyone. I think you’re right. Joomla would be a bit too much.

Re: General question - CMS

Use Wordpress, Joomla is for people that have lots of spare time on their hands

Re: General question - CMS

I really depends on what the need to do. drupal is pretty damn robust when it comes to taxonomy. There are also some news article scripts that are real easy to use as well. Really depends on the type of site.
