Read several articles on this topic over the last few days. I watched this clip in full length. They are hiding more things from us than we can imagine.
What Eli Pariser presented is exactly what I have noticed on many occassions but failed to make the connection. Just WOW!

Great video. I agree, yet the web side of me disagrees. Everything online is about clicks and page views. Showing people what they may not want to see leads to neither of those things.

And showing people what they don’t even know they want is just as important. Joe Surfer may think that he only wants to hear about XYZ, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if he stumbled across something about ABC that actually transformed the way he thought, or discovered a new book, or watched a doc that changed how he acted in the world.
This is the problem, everyone has reduced the Internet to pageviews and clicks instead of presenting the larger experience of exploring the world.
Accidental surfing is just as important as targeted and filtered search. I mean let’s take this down to our level: if you’re only ever presented with porn sites featuring blond guys, you might never figure out that you like black guys, or uncut cocks, or hairy guys from Italy.
That’s what made the Web so great is that we were exposed to all kinds of points of view. If you were a freelance writer in the 1980s, it was often hard to get published, you had to get past the gate keepers of the time. Then the Web allowed anyone with a computer to publish their point of view. Now we’re headed backwards where the big guys decide for us what we get to see.
I see a revolt in the future and players like Google and Facebook might end up finding themselves on the bad end of a public that is tired of being fed information instead of allowing that public to discover it for itself.

Well said Michael. I personally find it scary how much Google and Facebook know about us all. Sort of like we all have big brother watching us. There is a great book by Ben Elton that came out a couple years ago called ‘Blind Faith’ that described what could happen in the future if we continue down this path. From the book’s description:
‘Why has Trafford not been streaming his every moment of sexual intimacy on to the community website like everybody else? Does he think he’s different or special in some way? Better than his fellow man and woman? Does he have something to hide?’
It’s a very chilling read and while it might sound a bit far out at first, I think we are heading more and more in this direction.

Well, I have long said that we shouldn’t think that Facebook and Google will be around forever, or even the big players forever. People have often said I’m crazy. But all it takes is something like this and the surfing public could drop them like a hot potato.
Can you imagine if Bing were come out with a campaign that said, “We don’t filter results. Come to the uncensored Web.” Of course Bing is likely doing it too. But a new player could jump into the market with such a campaign and we could really start to see a shift.
And people are eventually going to tire of Facebook’s domination, how they sue anyone with “face” or “book” in their names, and they’ll move on to the next big thing.
Yes, Google and Facebook are giants now, but giants can fall, too, and they fall harder.

Yep I agree Michael… for instance take Microsoft, which is still a giant, but all the younger generation associates it with being old and totally uncool… or Nokia where youngsters from elementary school would never touch it, yet it was all the rage 8-9 years ago… D&G, Ungaro, Yahoo… yep things come and go, some stay and keep living on the breadcrumbs, hopefully people will get sick of hanging on Facebook and delete their accounts eventually

Yahoo used to be huge and now is nothing, so anyone can fail I don’t know why Yahoo self destructed it’s kind of crazy I loved yahoo in the old days had huge groups

Can they not be circumvented by signing out, or turning off your cookies ?

With Google if you add &pws=0 to the URL personalized search it turned off. There are also add-ons for the major browsers that do it automatically for you.
