Design widths?

I just an email from the boys over at intensecash saying that they’ve redesigned straightboysjerkoff.com

to take advantage of surfers all having wider screens.

what size monitors are designers designing for and what size monitors are webmasters seeing on their sites?

Re: Design widths?

I’ve been using 980, which is what Straight Boys Jerking Off just upgraded to, for about three years now.

Re: Design widths?

I’ve been using about 1000 px for my static sites, and am noticing that many blog themes are hitting that mark as well.

Re: Design widths?

Same for me, been doing around the 1000px mark. With that size your site will look the best for the most amount of visitors.

There is however a few things to consider. Will your content be big enough for all that space? For example, on GayDemon’s Blog we’ve been using 600px wide pictures for a while now, but it’s not always easy to find content that’s big enough. Some sponsors only supply content that’s 400-500px wide. So you got to make sure you got something to fill all that space with. Same goes with videos, not all will be wide enough.

Also remember that text that’s wider than 400-500px becomes difficult to read. Over 600 and readability goes way down plus it looks pretty bad too.

I’ve read somewhere that the safest size for optimized 1024px designs is 980px width.

Re: Design widths?

Why not just use fluid measurements based on percentages and adaptive content including images? This will solve the problem of multiple screens and browsers.

Re: Design widths?

Fluid designs are good in theory but it often ends up looking terrible.

How would you go about creating adaptive images? Say a image provided by a sponsor is 450px wide, how would you make it adapt to a fluid design which might expand to 1600px wide? That leaves you with 1200px empty blank space.

Re: Design widths?

The main issue with a fluid design is text. Text needs to be controlled for readability among other things. Also, with fluid design on a porn tour you lose a certain degree of control that I feel is very important.

Re: Design widths?

You would use PHP and some algebra to change the image to fit the area in question.

Re: Design widths?

Text can also be easily controlled using logic in php and javascript and incorporating em or % measurements instead of pixels.
