Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

There is a video on the main Yahoo page now that says that Credit Card Companies are Now looking at where you use the card to determine if you a credit risk or not.

Will our sale take another hit if people a afraid to buy memberships with their cards if it might affect their credit score or rase their rates??

wow… how does where you buy things affect your being credit risk or not? That’s just fucking insane. Hooray for another way for the banks tighten their grip around the neck of the world.

Re: Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

Oh god… don’t get me started on Credit Card companies. I just started a new thread about my experiences with Wells Fargo before I saw this thread. Grrrrrr.

Re: Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

I wish I had saved a video link I had from about a year ago… the gist of the story was this - does anyone remember?

a guy calls to order a pizza -

the pizza delivery person says that he can’t order what he wants because the credit card company says that the latest medical tests at his doctor’s office showed high cholesterol levels so the order is being altered with a healthier choice -

the pizza person goes on to say that the buyer will want the better and healthier pizza anyway because they can see (on the credit card screen alert) that he is approaching his limit because he has just purchased tickets for a nice tropical vacation

the pizza person goes on to say that the customer will surely want to look a bit slimmer for the trip…

oh, and the pizza person sees that the credit card purchase of the airline tickets is for the customer and someone other than his wife - a female… etc, etc… do you see where this story is going

I remember how funny yet unreal and very real this story was - the implications are enormous but not impossible

makes you wonder - I prefer cash

wouldn’t surprise me one bit tbh…

I’m actually more worried about “grocery_store_name membership cards”. Everything you buy is tracked and advertisements, coupons, etc tailored to your shopping habits. My wife and I buy lots of DVDs at Fred Meyers and we get special coupons every month for xx% off electronics purchases. I love the coupons… but it worries me a bit in regards to what they eventually will do with my shopping history.

Only a matter of time til the insurance companies buy that data and whack you for eating x gallons of icecream per year.

Re: Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

Like the insurance companies haven’t already bought that info? whistle

The wife and I pay cash, or use the debit card. The bank keeps pushing to get us to sign up for their VISA but we refuse. Funny thing about it all, ever since we made that choice the RRSP has increased, the investments have increased. NO more paycheque to paycheque living. Definite upside to NOT having a credit card IMHO.

Re: Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

They have been doing this for YEARS! About 3 years ago, I had my credit card denied when buying groceries, I contacted my bank and they said they put a freeze on it because of suspicious activities. We went through the last few charges and found a charge for a couple of dollars in Miami and then a couple of thousand dollars in Italy. And apparently the card was swiped too. The bank said that according to their records, I am not in europe and nor did I recently buy tickets to vacation there, so it was automatically blocked. They said that there was also several more attempts to use the card for thousands more dollars that were stopped too. Turns out my card number was stolen and a fake card was created (they suspect in Miami).

Because of this proactive stance, they were able to reverse those illegal charges immediately, cancel the card and get me replacements. So its not always a bad thing - and nor is this new.

Re: Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

Luke,

You were getting scrubbed by a MaxMind db. C/C use that all the time. For example, if you make a charge in LA then one hour later try to make a charge in NYC, it should get declined. That’s why many porn transactions get decline when a porn surfer travels. i believe CCbill and Epoch have tight controls over that. We have seen many emails from customers traveling that can’t get a membership.

The admin section of NetBilling is pretty cool as it tells you exactly why C/C are getting declined.

Re: Credit Card Companys Now looking at where you use the card.

hehe…thats funny, we use the exact same maxmind technology and databases as the cc companies.

yeah well, what I learned while still in the advertising, marketing and design business and doing some work for “Disn*y” and a major bank is absolutely frightening - has to do with the little smart chips that are tagged into merchandise we buy and follows us and the life of the products we buy - and the GPS tracking already embedded into our cell phones, etc…

the next step is already here - digital billboards which will begin to target consumers with special sales and lifestyle messages based on our histories, income, demographic etc… as we approach the ads…

people my age have temporarily escaped the embedded chips they are now offering parents of new born children - selling the parents on “fear” tactics and comparing the technology to pet chip implants - and the smart chip national ID card will now be required for all US citizens and will be phased in according to age…

Ray Bradbury use to come by to have lunch with my boss once a month - I’d always tell him how much I loved Fahrenheit 451 - how imaginative and scary it was… now all I can say is its all too real!

hello Big Brother - are you watching me? hope you’re having a good time! Here’s some cum in your eye!
