Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos...HOW?

So I want to offer videos on a credit based system. I’ve contacted EPOCH and have decided to use them as a payment processor. I’ll be using WordPress as my CMS and s3 Amazon for hosting. I’ve tried to familiarize myself with CloudFont and s3media plugin to secure my streaming videos. NOW, I’m trying to figure out how to protect my downloaded videos. I know I can’t stop members from sharing videos but I believe there is program or something that allows downloaded videos to have an encrypted code that identifies the member that downloaded and pirated the file. So, when I do deal with take downs I can find out which member did it. Any assistance would be awesome.

PornGuardian.com and be sure you tithe your local deity.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

The only way I have ever found around this problem is making content that, even if a full video gets out and they’re watching it on PornHub, they’re still compelled to track down your site to see what else you have.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Which is another reason why I find it baffling that sites don’t add trailers for other scenes at the start or end of their full videos, or even in trailers.
Most of us try hard to direct a user to other similar content on our sites, so why don’t studios support this and encourage that themselves in their videos? Tubes do it, affiliate do it, studios do it on their own sites…

Sites should be ending (or even starting) every video with a screen of boxes showing other content related to what the user has just watched, this would probably help in both affiliate sales and directing attention to the site when a video is pirated too.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

you can also contact xvidsolutions. they will take over your content delivery and watermark every download and streamed video at about the same cost as a regular CDN, then as soon as you find one of your videos out there you can identify the account that was used to download it. https://autograph.xvid.com/

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

wow, very cool! What is the cost like compared to a standard CDN? Are you happy with the service?

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Thank you, I’m definitely going to look into that.

OK, now I’m finding it baffling that I haven’t done that already. You can be sure I’m going to start.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Thank you all so much. I remember the FlavaWorks case where they sued members who pirated vids. They used something that put a digital watermark in the video encoding that identified the user. Just couldn’t remember the software. Thanks!

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

we’ve just started with them, but all is looking good. We had been doing this ourselves for over a year, but their solution (including the CDN for which they use amazon) worked out at the same cost as our own CDN by itself, so financially it was a no-brainer.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

That Xvid service does look very interesting. Can anyone give some actual cost figures? They do not appear to print pricing info on their site, something I always find suspicious.

Also, if you do not see the xVid watermark in a video and your video shows up on a tube site how do you find out which user uploaded it?

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Their pricing will depend on your site requirements… The watermark is not removable by restreaming, cropping, cutting and it is also not visible, so if the content was delivered by their system, the watermark will be there

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Thanks, we’ll check them out!

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

I figure the watermarks should have both download IP and username. Sometimes the paying members are good, but their email account or website htpasswd file got hacked. So the pirates can use the paying member’s ID to download and share the video. Only if the download IP and username match, you can make sure the member is a theft. Anyway, it sounds like a nice tech against piracy.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

For those that don’t know could you guys explain CDN and how it’s used in conjunction with your paysite?

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

I can steal from Wikipedia…
A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a globally distributed network of proxy servers deployed in multiple data centers. The goal of a CDN is to serve content to end-users with high availability and high performance.

so, we use a CDN to deliver images and video to our customers at a consistently high speed.

JacobH, the watermark is neither of those things, but more like a unique key that you can then use to retrieve that information from a database. The database can store whatever you need, username, IP, time etc. We also have systems that recognize users login and usage patterns that alert us to when they think someone’s password has be hacked or shared, reset they password and resend it to the authorized email address only. There is a lot of this that goes on and sometimes we can see thousands of password guess attempts coming through too…

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

We (PornGuardian) have integrated the Xvid solution directly into our dashboard, so you can upload files into the system right from Porn Guardian. When our harvesters find your content, we input all the information into dashboard, and you get a report of who downloaded it and all the places it showed up, along with what else those posters have posted of your content. We have a partnership deal with Xvid and offer very low pricing for their services.

Keith, I’ll send you a note separately, as this is a great add-on service to our regular monthly service.

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Dominic, are you guys doing Google DMCA’s nowadays as part of your service?

Re: Content Producers Protecting Downloadable Videos…HOW?

Yes. Millions of files reported to google.
