A couple months ago we decided to get a bit of a head start on the whole age restriction thing (the UK failure of a scheme we all knew wouldn’t work) and chucked a date of birth checker on one of our blogs. It immediately screwed up our analytics and we saw sales drop too. We stuck it out for a while because we actually liked the system and felt better about having the warning up there, but after I deactivated it today traffic has jumped up and sales have already improved.
I guess it’s because the age checker we had was relying on cookies and a lot of our traffic is mobile. I suspect a conflict of privacy settings in mobile browsers was kicking visitors out and irritating them when they came back and had to go through the process again.
So, I thought I’d ask what you guys use, if anything.
I remember there was an old simple system of adding a meta tag, but I believe that’s dead now.
We’d just like to have that added bit of warning, but we’re really not sure what works.
Any ideas? Thanks as always!
