i need a quick check here. to me, the term skinhead means a sort of white power punk. the type i'm thinking of are not only bullies but tend to be gay bashers. i checked with a couple other people who both said that's what it means to them.

i'm editing some writing and one of the writers called a model a skinhead. the model's head is shaved, and he is gay and seems friendly and not the type i would associate with the term skinhead, but i hate to change another writer's work unless i'm sure the term used isn't appropriate.

so - what does "skinhead" mean to you?

A Skinhead has a shaved head.

A Neo Nazi is the one you associate to a Skinhead. However, a Skinhead is not always a Neo Nazi.

i've never met a guy with a shaved head who called himself a skinhead. every person i've ever heard called a skinhead was a neo nazi or other unpleasant type. my issue isn't so much that you could technically define any shaved head guy a skinhead - it's what the readers of the piece will associate the term with. turn on or turn off?

what do you personally think of when you hear the term skinhead?

I think the definition got broaden with time. Skinheads trouble makers... Gay hating anything else than Caucasian and young people. Today, especially in the erotic gay business.. A site like BullGogPit.com is often referred to as a Skinhead site. A far cry from the definition I once knew...

To me, the term is more about the looks (shaved head, doc marten boots, bomber jacket) than the politics. Usually when talking about the neo-nazi extremists, the term "racist skinhead" is used.

I think it's a general term, personally, that in general use reflects the worst definition possible. On a general level.

However...

Witch does the same thing:

I think in gay terms, skinheads are rough, inked, kinky, shaved studs. Not to be confused with nazis or anything like that.

Probably showing my age
When I hear the term skinhead I immediately think of the guys from American History X

Very naughty people.

When the Bel Ami vids were becoming popular a few of my friends used to uncut eastern european guys skin heads for other reasons.

What's your audience? I think 'skinhead' is pretty popular in the UK in gay circles. It's about attitude and looks (and nothing to do with white power - though most of them are white). Went out with a guy from London after Lloyd's 4th of July party and couldn't really find the skinheads he was interested in here in NY.

There's a whole gay skinhead subculture - just google it.
The very masculine "look" is slightly intimidating to some.
But never judge a book by its cover - a lot of them are pussycats. (On the other hand, I've met some clean cut looking guys with a full head of hair who have some very unpleasant views on sexuality, race, etc).

For skinhead porn, take a look at http://www.trigafilms.com/

I often get my hair cropped very short in the summer, and while it doesn't change my politics, it does change people's reaction to me. People kind of let me pass on the stairs or make way for me at the bar. Some people clearly find it a turn on.

Yes, Skins is a fairly big scene in London, I've gone to a skinhead places a few times. It probably originated in the Punk scene in the 70/80 and continued as a gay sub-culture. It couldn't be further removed from neo-Nazis. It just like Goths or any other sub culture that distinguishes itself by the way they dress and look.

If you went out in London's Soho you would easily find a few gay Skinheads.

I got a section on GayDemon with Skinhead sites (http://www.gaydemon.com/directory/fetish_and_BDSM/skinheads/).

Thanks very much Patti for getting some feedback before looking into changing my blog entry. You're a good friend and respectful co-worker.

I did a little research into the gay sub-culture thing before using the terms. Plus I went from my experience with one of my own blogs - http://www.all-gay-porn.com/blog/?p=158 - which made a few sales within a few hours of being up. Whether it was from the content or the wording, we'll never know. It did get a lot of hits though and still is. "Skinhead" was in the search terms according to stats quite often too. Mostly "gay skinheads".

I can certainly understand the concern though. Some negative relation comes up in most people's minds from the term "skinhead". Like others have said though, I do believe that's changing a bit as this new sub-culture takes off. It could turn out to be an interesting little niche.

Peace

I agree with Craig. Skinhead and Neo Nazi skinheads are two totally different breeds.

The "Black Powe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Power)r" movement has many different sub ideologies as well, most more progressive and less evasive then the black separatist movement that was the genesis of the "Black Power" slogan of the mid 1960's.

In our current age of identify politics who's to suppress being proud of being Gay, Lesbian, Black, Hispanic, Asian or White? Let's not forget that the white race is a minority amongst the global population, yet the majority of those who post on Gay Webmaster boards ;)

To me a skinhead is someone proud of being a part of the Caucasian race, it's only negative if they want to kill others, or discriminate, based on race, that's fucked up no matter who's doing it or what race they belong to.

UK skinheads have very little to do with skin colour. Its just a subculture that listen to certain type of music, shave their heads and dress differently. A friend of mine used to date a mixed race / black skinhead. Nothing weird with that.

But if you go to Germany, you will encounter a very different skinhead who are much more likly to be Neo-Nazi. It's different in each country.

Skinhead to me usually means I should do what I'm told for the next couple of hours :)

To me, having a skinhead was because I HATE going to the hairdressers! :D
