Google Verification String

While checking out stats via the google webmaster tools I noticed an error saying google was unable to verify my site because they didn't find the meta string they were looking for. I haven't changed the page, so I'm not sure how it could have been corrupted.

Does anyone know if the string has to be periodically updated? Also, is it easier to just insert the HTML page they create?

I use the html page and have never had a problem

i created the page and haven't had a problem - but if i did, it's easy to reupload the page.

The Google verification string on my sites has stayed the same since inception.
