I'm wondering if any techies out there might have an answer to this.

Recently got a new computer with Vista. My Creative Zen's software disc wasn't compatible and after much fussing with the techs, they finally provided me with a link to software that worked with Vista. (They didn't want to help me at first because my player was three years old and not "eligible" for e-mail support).

However, if I keep my Creative docking station plugged into a USB port on the computer, the external hard drive sitting on my desk will either display only some of the folders on it or only give me access to certain things on it. The external drive doesn't become completely available to me until I've restarted after having had the docking station plugged into the computer.

Any ideas on what's happening here. It's a little frustrating. The first time I experienced it, I thought the external hard drive failed or got erased.

What happened here is that you did not buy a MAC in the first place.lol

No shit. I have two external hd's on Vista and BOTH of them keep un-mounting and asking me if i want to reformat them. Plugged them into various ports/hubs and still the same thing.

The problem most probably is that the driver is still not 100% compatible with Vista.

My Skype phone still doesn't work right.

My dual display boots only the laptop screen EXACTLY every other time I re-boot.

Vista has so many "hidden" features you will be amazed...

Microsoft had a compatibility script you could run, that detailed what drivers would or wouldn't work, programs, etc. It also listed where to get the updates for some of the software that wasn't compatible. It was on their upgrading to vista from xp page, think it is still there. Might be worth a look see.

I've had similar problems Michael.
I noticed that external USB storage devices are often assigned a different letter when the computer boots. Adding or removing a device when the computer isn't on can totally screw up your directories and shortcuts.
A solution that has worked well for me is to only add or remove devices when the computer is already on. That way they get logged correctly in the registry.

Yeah Paul, I learned that one a while ago, too. This problem is a little different. I plugged my Mp3 player into the computer, upload a file to it, unplugged it, and a couple of hours later when I went to drive in Photoshop to open a picture, the drive wasn't even there.

Weird.

Did it work correctly in XP?

Yeah, it did.

And everything is fine on Vista as long as I don't plug my MP3 player into a port.

Well. Looks like you can't plug your MP3 Player into the port. Same is true with my Skype phone.

Yes.. it might be you got to wait until a new Windows 7 is out. Vista sucks when it comes to supporting different hardware.

I can't get wireless network to work on Mum's brand new laptop, it used to work but after a microsoft automatic update it stopped working. I searched around and found out that its not an isolated problem. Lots of people can't get Vista and some wireless network cards to work.

Seems there is little hope it will be resolved either..

Why resolve it when you can force the customer to upgrade? Seems to be the mantra of the software/hardware world.

Pretty much. Especially when every new MS OS makes so much obsolete. I miss my Skype phone, but now that the Iphone has a Skype app I am happy again.
