i'm not happy with the registrars i know of. directnic has some policies i'm not thrilled with, i'm definitely not a fan of godaddy, and i've found that it's virtually impossible even with help from support to move a domain away from namecheap.
anyone here recommend a good registrar?

I use 1and1 and haven't had any problems, though haven't moved any away, so can't say how they are.

Enom.com (http://www.enom.com) is extremly good. I've moved all my domains to them. I think they are like a top level domain registrar or something like that.. anyway any changes I do seem to be done and spread out very quickly. Never had any problems and support is good (but your unlikly to need the support).

I second Bjorn's nomination of Enom. We've been with them for 5+ years and I like the fact that I can reach a real person when I have a problem (not a minion in an enormous call center but someone who can actually solve problems.)
I also like the fact that when I buy a domain, I don't have to go through 10 pages of BS trying to sell me crap I don't want, as GoDaddy does.
And I like the fact that they don't hvae a million hidden charges, such as the $75 Godaddy fee you get if someone accuses you of spamming through your domain.
btw, Namecheap is not a registrar, it's an Enom reseller. I've also heard bad things about them, but I guess with a name like "namecheap" you aren't paying for outstanding service :)
You have to prepay for a certain number of domains to get decent pricing from Enom (I think it's 50 or 100 is the minimum) but for my money, the peace of mind I get from being with them is worth it.
Domainnamesystems.com was my very first registrar. They are a Tucows reseller. They don't show any ads at all, but the interface is pretty outdated. You can get the job done quickly though.
And they send you emails 2 months in advance to remind you to renew, which is good if you're forgetful as I am. Fast support.
I moved most of my domains away from them to Namecheap because of the price.

Hostway has also been good for me, domains are only $7.95 and support is pretty good although their user interface could be better. Moniker is great if you get their price down, you can usually get a cheaper price if you buy in bulk or transfer a lot of domains over to them (just email their sales department before and ask for a discount before you do it). Hope that helps!

I've never waited longer than 3-4 hours for a domain to be registered with Naked Hosting. In fact, I've seen it go though as soon as 15 minutes a few times. It might be because I'm a "preferred" customer, I don't know. Domains are $15 though, so a bit pricy, and then add $10 for ID protection. To me, it's worth it though and I buy a few new ones a month. I know there are places with cheaper domain names, but the support at Naked Hosting is sensational. They're always there whenever I need them.

Enom.com (http://www.enom.com) is extremly good.
Get in touch with Eric from DomainShack, they are an enom reseller and he provides top notch support for his clients. They are a bit more expensive @ 10.95/yr, but they will provide service that others lack.
I don't like directnic...
Moniker.com is great to deal with.

Hehehe. I hooked Bjorn up w/ Eric. I love Enom and I love the support that Eric gives. He hooks you up with an account at enomcentral.
Luke,
Thanks a million for turning me onto Eric a while back. Awesome service.

I use HostMonster.
Rates are good, the interface is simple and they have lots of little tools and extras that work well for me.
But, I don't do adult with Hostmonster so I have no idea what their rules are surrounding adult.
