Anyone else been / live there?

I've never been to Miami, but I've been to Ft. Lauderdale. Since they're only a few miles apart, I'm assuming the weather is the same. I was there in July and could have used three suitcases of clothes for the four days I was there. Good lord it's hot and sticky.

Having lived in Miami for 5 years I can tell you that the Latin (mainly Cuban) influence on the city is what makes it different from the rest of Florida. Disney is not in Miami...it is Orlando which is about 150 miles away. I would avoid Orland totally as it is a very boring city with no character at all!
You will love South Beach with it's clubs and variety of dining experiences. The beach is fantastic also unlike the cold and dirty beaches you will find near Orlando (Daytona Beach for example...terrible).
I would also recommend going to the Everglades to see some alligators...and the drive to Key West and the southern most point in the US is great! You can also snorkel in the tropical reef and see all sorts of tropical fish!
Have fun!

If you have the time on your stay, this is a great idea. Its requires a drive, but it would be worth while. Key West can be a lot of fun. South Beach also must not be missed, it can be quite a spectacle.

Miami is heaven on earth! The beaches, weather and people are beautiful.
For gay nightlife, you will probably want to go to Ft. Lauderdale though (Wilton Manors is the gayborhood). And a cab ride from Miami to Ft Lauderdale is probably going to be $30-50 each way depending where you stay in Miami. Honestly, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami are not that close together. But if you want the "real" Miami experience with supermodels, cocaine cowboys and cutting-edge (straight... mixed at best) night clubs, you can't beat South beach.
It may be best to stay in between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale... Aventura, Sunny Isles (legal nude beach!), Hollywood, or Hallandale may be better locations if you want to see different areas of the cities. But stay near the beach. The humidity and bugs are non-existant if you are near the water... although the wind can be quite strong at times. And May is the start of hurricane season but I wouldn't worry about that too much.

I see others recommending a side trip to Key West. I wouldn't bother. I was horribly disappointed. It is NOT the gay mecca that it once was. It seems like a crowded Disneyland for alcoholic, fat, obnoxious, straight Americans. And the only beach is man-made and it sucks ass.
And I can't stress enough that it is OVER-CROWDED! My partner actually ejoyed aspects of our visit to Key West. The drive is actually kind of an adventure as you skip from tiny key to tiny key by a seemingly unending series of bridges. And the area definitely has it's own unique charms.
Maybe I went on the wrong day. Lol.
