It has now been 10 years since I was arrested for drunk driving (the 4th time) and finally checked myself into an alcohol addiction treatment center.

I was a FUCKING MESS. I drank to the point of blackout 4 or 5 times a week. I was drinking over 24 beers a day. I was drinking in the morning and even installed a new shower stall with a shelf so I could have a place to put my morning cocktail while I showered.

A very public and very humiliating arrest gave me that last kick in the ass I needed to get myself to a rehab center. I went through DT's for 4 days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delirium_tremens

One of the other patients died during my second week. I did not want to be that guy.

It has taken a lot of hard work. There have been some really shitty times and times I really wanted to take a drink and times I really wanted to just get drunk. Thankfully, there have been a lot of great times and good memories over the past 10 years and getting sober changed my life.

It's an amazing achievement, especially when you look at how much you've accomplished in the past 10 years and think about the fact you probably couldn't have done any of it, and possibly may not even still be alive, if you didn't stop when you did. Congrats and all my best wishes to you buddy! :)

You rock Chad! Here's a big hug and kiss on the cheek for you ;)

Thanks for sharing this part of your life with us over the years, ikt's a great reminder of how fragile we are as human beings and how destructive addiction can be.

Chad, I am so proud of you. Our world would have been a lesser place if you had not been in it.
Better that you replaced it with hot sex instead.
Keep it up handsome.

Drink early, drink often.

Then learn how to vomit as casually as urinating so it is possible to keep drinking. Really hard nights I would throw up 2 or 3 times in the bar bathroom but would go right back to the bar for more. Then get a 6 pack take-out in case I was not ready to sleep. I have pissed in my pants without even knowing it, vomited in my sleep, and experienced really hard binges where I have no memory of Friday night through Sunday morning. Those weekends the bar tabs and carbonless check copies helped to piece things together. I had a flabby neck and a swollen liver. I could not go a day without a drink or my hands would start to shake! I knew that it only takes a few drinks to make those shakes go away -- it was kind of embarrassing trying to hold a cigarette and hands trembling so bad I just had to hold it over the ashtray instead of flick ashes. Once I got my blood-alcohol level up the shakes would go away. What other people call "drunk" was my normal.

But that was now a decade ago~
