People generally say that on freesite pages you shouldn't provide navigation to the other gallery pages, i.e. Gallery 1, Gallery 2, Gallery 3, Home, etc., but instead it's better to make the surfer use the back button.

I suppose the theory is that they'll see your ads more. But if they've already seen them once and didn't click, is seeing them three more times going to change their mind?

Has anyone ever proved this theory or is this just something that everyone parrots on the boards?

My thinking is that if you make it easier for a surfer to get around your sites, they're hang out longer and surf more of them.

Your thoughts?

i did better on mine without the extra navigation. it may be worth mentioning that i have different ads on each gallery page, so the surfers hadn't already seen the ads on each gallery - and btw, something i learned a long time ago during tgp galleries is that if you have a very similar link on top and bottom of the gallery, you'll make less clicks and less sales - the top or middle of the gallery and bottom should have links that use different trigger words, different phrasing, are different numbers of lines and perhaps different size of text.

I used to have navigation back to the main page and scrapped it.

Sales have been going up and up throughout the development of them. Its hard to say whether it is because of navigation changes, but I genuinely believe it helps. I like to educate the surfer that more porn means visiting sponsors rather than going back to the main page and selecting another gallery.

Forcing them back to your main page to get to the next gallery exposes the surfer not only to the banner ad, but also to the 3 circle jerk links. If they aren't seeing something hot on the gallery pages, odds are they'll stay within your sites and check out one of those links instead. It's part of the filtering process. The other reason for using "not clean" navigation is it has your surfer being a lot more selective about what they look at, which results in less bandwidth usage. Perhaps today that isn't such a big concern, but even 4-5 years ago a small overage could mean a nasty billing surprise.
