I did not realize until I just reinstalled google toolbar, that google allows you to install a smiley or frowney face as voting buttons for any URL you visit. That vote apparantly gets sent to google.
Made me wonder what impact that voting has on web page positioining in google.
Can it be abused?
it is just one of the billion of things that concur in sites ranking in google. I don't think it have a big impact on the ranking anyway

Voting as in Page Rank?
I don't know but it makes me think it is calculated as part of the formula for page rank. It is two Icons in the browser toolbar that you can click smiley if you like the site, frownie if you don't...
You know they put them there for a reason....and i bet it plays into the formula

It might be, but I think is more for them to tailor the search results for those using their 'personal search' option. Helps them determine what 'paid' and 'non paid' for ads to throw at you, I think, I guess 666

From Google,
"Voting buttons: If you especially like or dislike a web page you're visiting and want to share your opinion with Google, you can vote thumbs up by clicking the happy face or thumbs down by clicking the unhappy face. These buttons can also be used to report especially useful or unsatisfactory results after searching with Google. Just click the appropriate button while you're still on the results page. This feature is currently in test mode, so you will not notice any immediate effects based on your action, other than experiencing a warm sense of satisfaction from having shared your feelings with people who really do care. "
So for now, no. In the future? Hmmmm....

God. Maybe they are going to try and toss "targeted" results at you. Like some of the radio stations do. You rate a song thumbs up or down and get a radio station just for your tastes. That could be bad.

that would actually be my guess.

I know they are going to use it to throw more personalized search results at the surfer, but it also seems to stand to reason that the data would be somehow included in the page ranking formula for general search results too... if enough people say page X sucks, then would they present page X to the user who hasn't voted based upon the voting of X number of previous users who had seen the page and voted it badly?

Yes sounds likly to be like radio stations or amazon does.. it would be insane not to use such valuable data.

I agree. But I also think like Llyod said, it could be bad...and probably easily abused. Hmm...I wonder why I always think in terms of abuse?

Here is the problem. I would vote if i liked the design vs. the content. So they would toss me a bunch of cool designed sites.

Yes, the data is being mined for a reason, and I suspect not to simply present "like" pages the next time you surf....I suspect it will at some point be included in the PR formula. At that time, it leaves pages open to sabotage. A good word of mouth "vote for the worst" kind of campaign against as site could be disastrous.
