in WP? I am creating a blog that will have quite a list of cats. Wondering if I will get in trouble.

Depends on what you mean a lot.

If you use the 'category' as part of your permantlink structure it shouldn't really matter if there are a ton or not. Besides, the categories only show up when there is something in them.

SEO, can't see why it would be a headache. They link internally, so shouldn't be a problem.

Only headache I could see is in design. More categories, with content, the longer the sidebar. whistle

As far as performance it will be no porblem
As Gaystoryman stated the only problem may be the length of your side bar.
I would suggest using a 3 column layout with any ads you may have on one side and the Cats on the other by them selves, it should help a little

I'd still use a 3 column theme, so on one you can have some BM promo stuff listed, that wouldn't be buried by the category tree. I'd maybe add a breadcrumb menu plug in, if you planning on having that many categories.

As no SEO, I'd also think about sub categories. If you have say something like Redheads then a sub could be 18 to 20, 21 to 23, or uncut / cut

No limits really but with 3 column layout you could have a long sidebar just for your categories, thus not lose the other stuff. whistle
