If someone was starting a new blog, what is the minimum plugins you would recommend. I know a spam killer is tops, some sort of SEO plugin. Specifics?

Depends on your blog. I like to add my stats plug ins, tag cloud plug in, who is online plugin and a more robust text editor so I can fancy up my dull writing.

If a photo or video blog, then a good plug in for those. Photo's I use Shutter Reloaded, videos I am trying out video embedder that seems okay.

I use on all of mine:
All in One SEO Pack... google seems to love it
Google XML Sitemaps.....does sitemaps for Yahoo also
Smart Update Pinger....prevents pings when you are just editing posts, avoids spamming
WordPress Database Backup
Exec-PHP....run php inside your pages
cforms II....can create multiple forms
Dean's FCKEditor For Wordpress....better WYSIWYG editor
NextGEN Gallery....for photo galleries
WP-ShortStat...states
Page Link Manager or Menubar......so I can pick the pages that appear in the menu or
Anarchy Media Player.....flv, mov, mp4, m4v, m4a, m4b, 3gp, avi, asf and wmv
Naatan.com PageActivity.....shows how many users are watching any page
WPAds....for ad management
I then add others depending on what the blog will be used for.

I am sure others will make more suggestions, but these seem to work very well for me.

If you have plans to upgrade to Wordpress 2.5, I would recommend you keep your plug ins to the barest minimum, if any really. The list of plug ins that WILL NOT WORK is growing it seems.

Couple mentioned in this thread ARE ON THAT LIST.

Now, supposedly there will be NEW releases of them, but when is an issue.:bang:

CHECK HERE FOR A COMPLETE LIST (http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Plugin_Compatibility/2.5#A_-_D)

I thought one of the main things that the guys at WP were trying to do when 2.0+ hit, was to not make every dang plugin crash and burn.

What's the old saying? Best laid plans of mice and men often go astray?

Yeah but in doing it, they changed the way the database stores info, changed how WP access or codes to it, and now it seems are making more database/code changes. :bang:

I was looking to add a new blog for something other than porn, because WP is a lot more akin to what I need, but now, sit and wait, sit and wait, sit and wait, and oh yeah, sit and wait. :grrr:

The other aspect of this whole 'upgrade' bullshit is that the themes/plug in list of what works & what doesn't isn't upgraded as quickly as the releases come out.

I'd vent more, but the wife is calling... whistle
