Okay, I am looking for a way to thwart the stupidity of my cable company here, and a techie at our local computer store suggested simply password protecting the bios when I boot up the computer, because that locks it down totally from outsiders.

So me not a geek

Anyone know anything about this, was it a valid suggestion? Can it really screw up my computer? I mean the guy was so cute, the wifey was drooling, so I am not sure, am I thinking he's right because he was hot, or because what he said made sense? :innocent:

wouldn't the right firewall do it? i believe that zonealarm could be turned up to super security level and will block anything from your internet connection till you turn it down again.

btw, http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/security-guide/s1-wstation-boot-sec.html
maybe this information helps?

Yes and No. It is for when the computer is off, and no one is around. Too many worms, trojans, viruses out there that are attacking the virus/firewall programs. I just don't want something resting to suddenly fire up the machine, had that happen on the wife's and it was a real bitch to get rid of.
