From MANY webmasters that run TGPS/MGPS I am hearing the same thing over and over - custom galleries work much better than FHG as far as productivity is concerned. But is it worth the extra investment on the bottom line?

depends on if you have traffic. if you're running your tgp as a serious site and not just a small side-project, then i'd say that yes, it's worth it IF - and this is an important if - you know how to make galleries that sell or your designer does. most designers make galleries that are pretty, but don't actually sell that well.

Two comments. I love the galleries that I create myself. They don't look canned like the FHG's, and they tend to sell better than the FHG's. But, it is a significant time investment to create the galleries, even using non-automated templates, so make sure you have several places you can use your hand-made galleries.
But, I also love FHG's as I can relatively quickly post a lot of these on my own TGP. They will make sales if the featured content is quality (especially if the content has not saturated the market yet).

Agree. Custom content will help prod. and good prod. helps the site grow. But if the galleries don't sell, your just gonna end up with a b/w bill that is inflated by the site growing.
So if you have the time to make the galls, and help or knowledge to create galls that convert, it's a positive for sure.
