Ok, so once you change the DNS settings with the people that you register your domain with, it should only take a few hours to go through the system? Just wanted to clarify.

I'm not the best one at this, but I think it depends a lot of the company.

Some can be really slow, others very quick. I think it depends how far down the ladder they are so to speak.

I only now use Enom which take only minutes for normal IP changes.

It depends on how quickly the various ISP's pick up the new DNS info from the registrar.

I think NetSol updates their DNS database 2 times a day.. early morning and late afternoon, then the ISPs have to snag the new data. If you time it right, the propagation can be pretty quick.

Count on at least 12-18 hours though for reasonably widespread access to resume. Bigger ISPs are going to be faster at getting new DNS data than smaller ones or ISPs in the far corners of the world.

Never had it take longer than an hr for netsol.

Isps are where the hold up usually is. But even that is getting better. I use Enom, GodDaddy, Directnic, and Netsol. I have never had dns take longer than an hour. Sometimes the wrong DNS gets cached somewhere.

Best bet to check DNS is to get a couple people do traceroutes from various places. Also, make sure your host has setup DNS properly. Sometimes they mess it up.

The way DNS is run has changed substantially in the last 3-4 years.

Generally, when you update with the registrar, unless it's a really crappy registrar, the change is reflected in the root nameservers within 15-30 minutes. Then, it's just a matter of how frequently each ISP (Comcast, Roadrunner, AOL, etc) updates its DNS cache. Most these days update every 30-60 minutes, but there are a few that only do so once or twice a day.

So the simple answer is, some people should be able to see your site within ~15-20 minutes, and some it could be up to about 24 hours, and for most it will be somewhere in between, but closer to 20 minutes than 24 hours.

Thanks everyone. I have updated my DNS pointers about an hour ago, and am already getting to the new server. I appreciate everyone's input on this one. Now, it will take me a few hours to load all my videos again...but that's another story....
