Thanks Bjorn!
It was just 4 short years ago when us liberals had to apologize to the rest of the world for our country's idiocy for re-electing Bush. It's nice to be praised for a change. :)

Boy don't I know that! Every conversation when I lived overseas was explaining that we don't all support Bush, etc. etc.
It looks as if they will pass prop 8 to modify California's constitution to ban Gay marriage. Also in Arkansas yesterday they've passed a measure banning Gay adoption of children and outlawed homosexuals from being foster parents.
In a recent interview on MTV Obama said he was against modifying a states constitution to take rights away from individuals. Does anyone think legislation will pass to give us all full rights in every state with Obama as president?
It's a great time in America and bittersweet for the Gay community.

What a magnificant victory for Obama. A certain glass cieling is now smashed into a billion pieces and at last, we have a good liberal man in the White House. I wish his Grandma was alive to see this.
Did you see his promise to get his little kids a puppy? I bet their more pleased about that than anything else LOL

While I'm very happy Obama won, it actually still scares me that 47% of the population voted for McCain. I have to say Obama was extremely smart in campaigning though, he managed to win the electoral votes by a landslide and get all the key states even though the popular vote margin was not huge.

Maybe we got it right this time. I would like to once again to be proud to say I am from the US instead of being ashamed.

I dont think you Americans should be ashamed of Bush. Especially if you didnt vote for him. I do sympathise a bit with his last re-election as people wanted to feel safe, and felt he could do that. Still a bad call of course but in a democracy people dont always vote the best way. And democracy is Americas greatest asset.

What a wonderful day! Congratulations American for taking this great step forward towards change. I'm saddened that gay marriage amendments are going against our community, but I'm so pleased to have witnessed this monumental change in America.
Cheers

My sentiments exactly with the added hope and promise that I believe Obama and our new Democracy will give equal rights to our community. I do believe a change is coming with Obama.
What a great new beginning and breath of fresh air!!

This is wonderful news for everyone.
The anti-gay measures are breaking my heart, but I sincerely hope that Squirt is correct and Obama takes his power national to undo these atrocities.
As a Canadian I am relieved and saddened by yesterday's events. But... hopeful, sincerely hopeful.
Congratulations everyone, for a hard-fought battle for sanity and change!
Warmest wishes for a bright future,
Mary
This truly is a good day in the USA!
As soon as the news networks called the race last night my neighborhood erupted. People took to the streets cheering, in hi-rises on their balconies cheering, banging on pots and pans, non-stop car horns... This lasted for a good hour or more. I've never seen anything like it and especially not for an election.
While several anti-gay measures may have passed around the country, I think its significant that Obama acknowledged gay people in his acceptance speech. Surely that has to be a first for this country.
Finally, a President who at least says he wants to bring the country together and did so in complete sentences & without stumbling over his words.

Perhaps this interview Obama did with the Christian Broadcasting Network will fuel the fire of hope within you ;)

I fear that doing this in the first term might be unachievable. He will be advised that it would be a political suicide to make such a move.
Bill Clinton found that out once he took office too.

I see Bill Clinton and Obama as two completely different political animals.
I don't envision our America telling the first black president that he's not right in enforcing the civil rights guaranteed in our constitution to all Americans. Could you imagine the backlash the first group would get that stood up and said "You're wrong. We shouldn't all be treated equal." It would be epic.
I really think that Obama sees his being elected president as an endorsement from the American people of the change he plans to bring to America. I could be wrong but read this bit from his acceptance speech last night beamed across the planet to hundreds of millions of people:
"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.
It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.
It’s the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.
It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America. "
He mentions the Gay community as being a part of America in your acceptance speech that hundreds of millions would hear, in different cultures around the world. It doesn't seem like Gay issues are seen as taboo by him. I dunno I could be wrong. I'm running on 2 hours sleep I need a nap lol what a great day!

Squirt,
Thanks for that video!
It was great to hear him speak like that and raise issues.
It was also, for once, nice to hear someone use religious scriptures to make a positive message rather than a hateful, racist one.
