a friend of mine started a str8 program - 3 non exclusive sites in regular porn niches. they did okay, so he added another site and another - and another. he got his designs from an expensive well-known company, and when they weren't what he wanted, he worked with them to get them right. he made fhg's that were simpler than most programs fhg's, but he tested each one on the hun till they were selling very well.
he now has 15 sites in the network and finally he tried a $1 trial with a very limited member area where almost all the content basically said this was a trial and you had to upsell. obviously he said it better, but guess what - he's been upselling 70% or better of those trials to full members. with a network of standard niches with sometimes very non exclusive porn. and he upsold them all to a $34.95 monthly.
what does he do that's different? each stop requires patience and testing and a good tour. he never goes cheap on a designer and he never "settles" on a design. he tested every single step with thousands of his own hits from multiple traffic sources, and only rolled each change or new site out for affiliates after truly thorough testing. most people i know throw their sites and new stuff up for affiliates the day they're done. and some large programs beta test by having a bonus day so their affiliates will supply the testing traffic, but that's not really a good way to test because the traffic will be more than usual and also will come from different sources than usual. and heck, once ars left us on a bonus day with join pages that didn't work ;) so using your own traffic is a huge plus to get the best possible information.
you can make non-exclusive sites that sell - although believe me, a newbie can't do it without help. but webmasters can make trials that consistently convert at over 50% even with non-exclusive content, particularly if you have a network of good looking tours.
