Thumbs and TGPs

Not asking about how the "quality" should be. But, when cropping thumbs what should one do to make them more productive? What do surfers look for. Hardcore? Close ups? Full body? You get the idea. Thanks in advance.

A bit of everything. I use to hand crop my thumbs thinking I had a feel for what my traffic liked. Then after a while I noticed all different kinds of thumbs getting high click averages. So now I just auto crop and it seems to work fine.
