Do surfers know what it means or is it a webmaster term?

I think It would be more of a webmaster thing.
They just know what they like.
But I'm sure some of them know.

I agree. I think it is mostly a webmaster thing, but I also think that there is probably a lot of "more educated" consumers that do know what a niche is. Be it in porn, or whatever.

It's more of a marketing / webmaster thing, and I personally feel that most surfers wouldn't appreciate having their tastes called a "niche" or a "genre."

--- I really like directories that boil it down to sex, nude men, ethnic men, et cetera - I think folks surfing sites categorized like that feel much more at ease.

--- I really hate directories that break out fetishes into TONS of subcategories. I don't think surfers are comfortable with that, as I know I'm not.

This place is about sharing, so I'm going to - even though it might cost me in the long run...

Actually I'm going to do something I usually do not do - I'm going to vent, like a sea lion after too much rotten fish.

www.realamateursproject.net is going to become a link list this year, and is going to categorize listings like so:

Age [18 - 24] [25 - 35] [35 +]
1 or 2 or 3 or more (guys involved)
Build

And that's it.

I've been looking at surfer comments from the last 5 years, and what I'm seeing is this:

Folks are tired of being "marketed at" every time they click a link - so I'm going to screen out sites that don't offer any real content.

Folks are tired of having any "leaning" on their part called a fetish ('specially the footsie folks) and a lot of them have stopped visiting directories that have dedicated 'fetish' sections because they're tired of being singled out.

Fully pissed off are the underwear folks, who don't think it's right to have a section featuring free galleries which mostly show the same 10 guys in FTL.

I have received hundreds of emails asking whether a site is "for real" or not. Most of these regarded www.papi.com, and I answered them honestly: "You'll love the site if you can cope with the inane shit said into the camera's mic and you like home-movie quality videos of well worn porn stars."

I may well become the next real bitch in this biz, but rest assured that the traffic I send will be happy.

the more savvy porn consumer would understand the "niche" thing but your average joe doesn't give 2 shits as he's just looking to drop a load of knuckle children... imo...

I tend to agree with you. We hear the words "niche" all the time. Mostly in relation to products. It's a "niche" product etc.

Surfers who read reviews seem to know the word 'niche'. Again that just makes them a 'savvy consumer', as you said MrJD.
