Does anyone have experience with advertising in actual paper magazines and flyers? I'm wondering if that's a good way to get signups.

Im looking at different advertising outlets, it seems kind of expensive. I was wondering if people really do join sites they see in magazines, or if I should just stick to online advertising.

My budget is small, but if magazine advertising has a BIG impact then I can divert my advertising budget to offline magazines instead.

thanks

while a lot of people tell me they don't make that much money on magazines, your situation is different. your site is free to join - the people i talk to have paysites. i used to advertise phone sex in print mags and generally did okay, but keep in mind something else - just like with websites, the wrong ad will bring in little result where the right ad can do much better. our first phone sex ads sucked bigtime - after we went and considered the ad, got a different model and changed it entirely, we started showing a profit that grew each month - remember, lots of people refer to the same magazines for 2 or 3 months or longer.

i suggest you work myspace and facebook as well as social bookmarking sites. it will take time and smart planning, and yes - it will be a lot of work, but it won't cost you money and if you do it right, it can have a long reach. i'm sure there are other - and more specific - communities for your site, as well.

Thanks Basschick.
I had a feeling that magazines would be more for larger ad and testing budgets.

A lot of print advertising is about brand awareness rather than direct sales. Have found that getting editorial in the right mag works v well, better than ads - news, a write up, a review. They usually want you to pay for an ad too, and you have to make it easy for the journalist by writing stuff they can copy and use, and giving it a newsworthy angle. If you look at a lot of the products that are written about in mags they often have paid ads too, but maybe not in the same issue.
