Looking for travel Insurance for my Holiday, I have the EHIC card as an EU citizen traveling within Europe, but they say I still need travel Insurance..

Looking around, the policies are so different. Some offer £3 million health cover, others over 10. So does anyone think their could be genuine reasons why Id need such a huge amount of cover, or does sound like marketing bs to get you to buy the more expensive option?

Also is there anything I need to watch out for when buying this? Ive decided I dont want an excess above £50 and I want luggage cover. I use travellers checks so cash cover is not needed? Or am I wrong on that?

You can claim health costs back worse case scenario if you're travelling within Europe, so I wouldn't bother getting something with extravagant health cover.

So long as your personal belongings are sufficiently covered and I would still make sure you have cash cover in case you cash your traveller's cheque and it gets lost or stolen.

If you are going to the EU then maybe I would go for anything up to 1 million, providing the cover includes flying you home for treatment. For the sake of £20 it cuts out an awfull lot of hassle if the worst did happen.

I never take out any insurance, my American Express covers me for whatever happens (as long as you use it to pay for the trip). Its well worth it.

So you guys think 1 million in health cover and luggage and cash is enough? I didnt think about what happens when I cash the checks. Thats only 50 euros a time anyway and think that would be less than the excess...

Would depend on where you are traveling to. IF its a country where you might need to charter an air ambulance to get to a real doctor, well...

Its only Gran Canaria which is EU and Spanish owned. Its part of the Canary Islands just of the coast of West Africa but they are well built and populated Islands.

As someone else suggested, I'd just make sure that your insurance covers getting you home if you're incapacitated in a hospital and need special transportation.

You might be surprised. There are different levels of American express and i think the basic cards also might have insurance included.

Also check any other credit cards you might have, some might offer some sort of protection in regards to travel, lost luggage etc.

But do you actually really need a insurance though?

Its to late for this time round anyway as its nearly paid for. Im guessing Id have to buy the holiday with he card to get the protection.

The EHIC people said I still need insurance in case they need to fly us home in air ambulance. Plus Im not sure health care is free in Spain anyway. I think it might be subsidised.

your home policy will cover most accidents and losses - health will cover the medical, illness related issues and auto (if you have good coverage including somthing like comprehensive) will cover you in the rental car... (we carry over one million just in case I run into one of the hundreds of Rolls Royces or Bentleys or whatevers on our trips back into BH and the injured needs to get another face lift resulting from the accident...)

the only thing you might consider is "travel insurance" which your travel agent can get for you - that will help if your trip is canceled because of a natural disaster like a typhoon, landslide, earthquake, forest fire, tidal wave... or something along those lines...(planning a trip to California?)

It may be a really small price to pay for assurance. If you get airlifted or need an ambulance ride that cost $$$$$$$ and they will bill you for it. I have seen visits on cruise ships to their infirmary cost as much as $1000.00 per visit. (My parents have used it before.) If all it cost is couple of dollars or pounds to be sure that you are well covered why not. You never know what will happen. Hell I have been to Italy and Athens, you can easily get hit by a car in those two countries.
