while a lot of people have hosting that includes 1-click wordpress installation, it occurs to me that this leaves webmasters at a disadvantage when it comes to doing upgrades - and not all hosts do those, or do them in a timely fashion.

that leaves me with 2 questions -

does anyone want to take part?

and will anyone here help us when we have questions?

i've done wordpress installs twice, but don't have a feel for it, and i've never done an upgrade, so this would be interesting for me :)

I'm sorta in the same position... I've done initial installs of WordPress before, but I'm a bit leery of upgrades... I just fired the guy who was doing a lot of that for me, so I could definitely use some place to discuss upgrade issues with the upgrade that's about to come out...

Well, the upgrade process is a lot more automated these days.

IF you are current, that being using Wordpress 2.5.1, the easiest upgrade is to use the Automatic Upgrade Plugin (http://techie-buzz.com/wordpress-plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade-plugin-update.html), that does it all for you.

There are 2 options, manual and automated. The manual simply takes you through it step by step, to where you simply CLICK to download the backups it automatically generates, then when you need to upgrade the DB it gives you the prompt, and then suddenly You Are Done.

The Automated option simply doesn't do the prompting to download your backup files until the end.

Both will deactivate the plugins, then put the blog into maintenance mode, then upgrade, then reactivate the plugins and even prompts you to clean up the temp files.

i seem to remember you having problems with deactivated plugins - is this the fix for that problem?

Nah, it still has issues with reactivating plugins but that is on my server, so it seems. It is a simple fix for me, I just go into the plugins and activate them. Plus with 2.6 you can do multiple plugin activation at once so it isn't a huge problem anymore, more of a minor irritant.
