Ok. The goal of a blog is to ultimately keep and up to date series of posts. However, when I was surfing quite a few link lists for gay porn blogs, many haven't been updated in a long time.

I was wondering if this reflects a good image on the link list?

I mean a surfer goes to the blog category and the first five blogs show last update 6 months ago.

Should link list owners maybe de list blogs that haven't updated after a period of time? Or maybe toss the ones that haven't been updated at the end of the list? It was annoying as a surfer to see at the top of the list crap blogs that weren't updated, but blogs that actually were updated daily near the end of the list.

List list owners should do what they want with their lists. Who are we to dictate their business model? From your example either the link list doesn't update regularly or they are doing well with the list they have, in the order they have it. What does that tell us?

I've seen some crap blogs that update with trash almost daily. I've seen some high quality and niche blogs that don't update regularly and do phenomenally.

I don't think I am dictating what they should do. It is just as a previous and current link list owner, bookmarkers are very important. Many times I put on my surfer hat and surfer my link list as a surfer and tried to understand how they may feel looking at my link list. That's all. No more, no less.

I do agree that no one should "dictate" how one should run their link list. But opening a topic for discussion never killed anyone.

If a link list owner wants to consider freshness it shouldn't be hard to do (with a little programming)... Just examine the blog's RSS feed and see if there are recent updates...

As a blog owner I'd love it if the fact that I did regular updates counted for something on link lists. Most of the time I get next to no traffic from link lists 'cause I get buried in with a bunch of crappy sites - so I don't even bother submitting my site much anymore... However, if they highlighted blogs that were recently updated, that would work in my favor and make it more likely they'd send me traffic...

I agree with RawTop, if they put updated blogs up higher, or gave them a highlight it would be more beneficial. I just don't think they bother to check for updates, or anything other than that you have their link up where it should be, and meet their guidelines. Don't think they even have the time to do more... but it would be nice whistle

Why don't you rank blogs that update regularly nearer the top of the listing, and those who don't at the bottom? Unfortunately one business model out there is to create a blog with a dozen or so posts, move on and create another one, and continue until you've got hundreds of the damned things. Personally I think it damages the whole business as people begin to lose faith in the blog model; but then, I guess when a surfer finds one that does update, I'm sure they bookmark it.

Sometimes I think 'we' just like shooting ourselves in the foot. New things come along, and 'we' all rush to embrace it, dilute it and then move on to the new craze. Think it comes from a lack of planning and sticking to it. :bang:

That is part my point. The goal of a link list is to get bookmarkers to the link list, not the individual blogs.

So, if the link list had a list of blogs that update on a regular basis, the surfer would bookmark the link list rather than the individual blogs, as in the surfers mind, he has more quality updated blogs to choose from.

A really smart link list would use the RSS feed to show the recent post titles at the blog...

One word of caution however... In my case, and presumably others, the feed is blended with affiliate content. Only the major search engines have access to the feed of just my posts. Everyone else gets my posts mixed with hosted blog stuff from sponsors. At least that's true for my porn feed - the main blog and stories feeds are unmixed. So it's important to validate the URLs in the feeds since they may have content that's not on the actual blog...
