lately most new tgps and mgps show thumb previews rather than either categories or descriptions. but i admit there are things i liked about text tgps.
for one thing, text links don't require a custodian of records, so if you stick to non explicit pics and banners, 2257 wouldn't be an issue.
descriptions may not get the same heavy volume of clicks as thumbs, but i've found the clicks to be a little better quality, and some other webmasters have told me the same.
if you keep archives, search engines love text tgps.
the downside is that there aren't a lot of trades out there for text tgps - they don't do well with hits from thumb tgps.
maybe for a project after the free site project we could build text tgps and interlink? it doesn't have to take long at all...

Text TGPS I have found to be real low in traffic. I think the best is a combo thumbs/text tgp.
Image tgps can boost in google as well as you get good trades from high PR sites. Add some text and it's a win win.

When I got into the tgp game, my first 2 sites were text sites. While prod was nice and high (300-325%) there were few sites to trade with and the sites didnt really grow. Both sites stayed right around 3-5k in traffic.
After a few months I changed both sites to thumb sites. Traffic tripled in 2 days. Sales went up by 400%. I never looked back.
That being said, there is a demand for text sites. Some users really like them. Just a lot more like thumb sites. If you have the time and ability, a 30-50 site text network would be a great traffic base imo and give you some good options.
Pornonada, a member/moderator on another board is in the process of building a huge, 100+ site lo/no skim text site network. I think it will do very well.

Would a good compromise be to have a thumbs-only and a text-only version of the same TGP? The text-only version could have a toplist comprised primarily of text TGPs.

I think if you look at the cost of starting a TGP, a text only is just as expensive as a thumb tgp. If you can't build the traffic to a text TGP, then the ROI becomes way too low.
Dropping $400 on a trade script and getting few trades just seems tough.

If you run a site where you skim 100% to galleries, you can use the free version of atx and not have to worry about the script giving away 1.5% of your traffic.
Not sure how the free text gallery scripts work. I know smart scripts (makes of smart thumbs) has a text script coming out soon. We'll see.

I have a free copy of Smart Text on my server. Due to lack of time I've never tried it out but I looked into admin area. It's a kick ass script. The only big problem is the price. I suggested a server license. Usually people who run 100% text sites base their success on tons of small sites intest of just one big site (with some exceptions). A $450 script for a site that won't go over 1-2k is a waste of money in my opinion. I would go with a basic text tgp script. It's doable in 10 hours of hard coding. Maybe less.

If you have money to invest you can point on number of sites. Managing 200 100% skim text sites is ways easier than managing 2 thumb big sites. You have to make one by one and forget about them :D

Agree. That was another reason I switched to thumb sites. I did not feel like writing 1000's of descriptions.

It's normal when you have both pictures both text on the same site. I'm going to do a test: 50 (both gay both straight) text tgp. The first one will be finished in about 2 hours.

GPPP use to be a MONSTER. May have at 1 time been the biggest gay tgp online. I heard that "Nysus", the current owner, won some $$ in a contest and bought GPPP as well as gaymovielist.com, another huge site. After that they both had huge drops in traffic.

With text TGPs I guess it depends on where the traffic is. 100 1k day sites could get a shit load more google if they were niched out.

We are talking the script that runs the tgp? TGPX is pretty damn good. A server license goes for like 170.
