Until yesterday I never had any such issue, however it appears that many have had, least enough to get some people to put together a list of how to get out of that situation, where when you deactivate a plugin, your blog won't go BOOM!.

BTW, for the askapache password protect plugin (http://www.gaydemon.biz/showthread.php?t=1997), do not CHMOD your content directory to 750 as they recommend as being ideal.
