Is there anyway of these being a little more visible or conspicuous? Also, can we have an email sent saying we have some waiting for us?

Sure. but what do you mean by more visable? Do you mean a link to the Private Message page or?
There is already an option under user settings which enabled you to get a email when you have a new PM.
Go to User settings > Edit Options
Under the heading called "Message & Notifications"
Tick in the 2nd option from the bottom, which says "Recieve Email notification of new private message"
You should then get emails sent out.
Let me know about the visable PM thing you mentioned.

OK, thanks Bjorn. I think that should be a default setting for a board like this IMHO.
Some boards have indicators that blink or make noise when a PM arrives if you are logged on...sometimes you miss the very tiny writing up in the top right hand corner.

I'll set that on default now for all, not sure if its working yet though. Let me know if you do not get messages by email.

By the way, on the same page there is a option for getting a popup box which tells you that there is new PM.
You can tick that in and it should start poping up for you. I wont enable that for everyone though since some people might not like that.
