i've been seeing a fair amount of paysites with join pages that open in new windows, leaving the site tour open in the original windows. i was wondering if anyone had tested this both ways to see whether a join page in the same window or in a new window converts better. anyone?
i tested this once in 1997, but i seriously doubt that's relevant any longer.

very interesting, I have never thought of popping the join page into a new window, I would love to hear if anyone does this.

Not only have I seen the join page in a new window but some use the lightbox effect as well. Of course I got a popup when I left the join page. Maybe that had something to do with it?

not on most of them. only a very few have popups when you close the join page browser.

I use it on 2 pages of my site, the index page and the guest chat page. I find that it gives them answers to "how much does this cost" so they keep it in mind as they surf through. About 5% of my signups are from that new window join page. Its not huge, but it prevents them from dead-ending too early. From the last page of the tour, it just goes directly to the page, doesn't open in a new window.
One thing I've been contemplating is some kind of navigation back to the site from the join page. I have a little "no thanks, maybe later" link at the bottom that goes back to index, and it gets some clicks. I wonder if some navigation back, more prominently on the page would allow them a second look and perhaps close the deal.
