View Full Version : Using Alexa to track traffic leaks...

Interesting in that I noticed in SOME Alexa listings that it tells the % of visitors that visited another site after the site tracked by Alexa.
Now, this could be due to two things:
1. They are using feeder sites on their domain name to boost the Alexa.
2. You can get an idea of how "leaky" the tour is and how well the leaks work.
3. I guess it could be due to feeds in the members area, bit I was told that the Alexa toolbar didn't track inside a member's area. (Could be wrong on that one.)

How accurate is Alexa data anyway?
I looked at the data for sites linking to a particular site and found a lot of "page not found" and pages that had not been updated for years.

yes.. exactly, they are not that reliable. I know for years after I stopped using a sub domain shop.gaydemon.com Alexa kept telling me that I send 15% of all traffic to that subdomain..

face it Bjorn you probably screwed up and left a ton of links point to it... how could another site without any way of truly tracking your traffic be wrong ? ;)

I stopped listening to Alexa a long time ago. I don't feel it truly takes accurate measurements. It can provide a comparative trend measurement of your competition but does it really matter if it is not a realistic targeted market.

not to steal the thread or anything but the question is related imo..
do you think alexa is better or worse at guessing than other services like quantcast, statsbrain etc ? anyone have any experience with this ?

With Quantcast and statsbrian TO ME. they seem to be way behind on updated info. Things like the owner and site description were all two years + old when I checked them. I think that one or both pull some of "their" results from Alexa.
