What's a megasite?

I was reading a review for a site that I thought was a megasite, but the reviewer said it wasn't a megasite.

So what makes a megasite?

there are 3 schools of thought on this.

a megasite used to be a huge site, often with many kinds of content.

then there are sites like bfcollection, which could be safely called a twink megasite

and newer review and link sites consider multipass sites to be megasites.

i guess in this case, you get to pick one.

A mega site originally was and should be a site that contains an unusually large amount of content - unlike an average amount.

Kind of dying out really. See what happened to the big good example of a megasite: Bedfellow.com.

Thats all but gone down the drain. I dont think there is a huge market for it anymore.

Of course it could apply to the likes of Topbucks, Platinum Bucks etc which give you access to loads of sites and feeds.

The only good megasite left imho is Tyler's room. That is an example of a site that actually has good value for the money.

I would consider Tyler's Room a megasite:

1. Has just about every feed available
2. Extras like non exclusive photo galleries and movies
3. Exclusive content (video and photo)
4. Huge Library of DVD rips.

With that one exception, I agree the megasite model is almost dead. It's sites like Rainbow Rev that are bringing new life into the model by creating cookie cutter sites that all lead to one bog members area. They are good if you want a bunch of plug ins with limited content in a certain niche and some variety.

Czechboys is a decent megasite as well - it's long in the tooth and confusing to surf, but there really is a ton of decent original content as well as lots of plugin and canned stuff as well.

As far as multipass sites being megasites, I'm not sure I agree. Multipass stuff usually spans several niches. Pridebucks is a good example of this - twinks, str8 guys, hung and mature.

Here's a question: As a site ages and gathers more content, will it eventually fall into the megasite category just by size alone?

So is "megasite" the evolution of a normal site with regular updates?

I consider a megasite to be a paysite that attempts to satisfy everyone. They do this by combining many niches under one umbrella. They update often usually with non-exclusive content and they have a massive library of older content and many plugins.

IMO, a paysite with a focused niche or high-qyuality exclusive content does not ever evolve into a megasite even with a huge back library.

Exactly how I feel. Must be us old timers?

For example, I like boy fun as a twink site. To me, it's a twink site. It may be the largest twink site. But, imho, it is by no means a megasite. It may be a "mega of a twink site". The monster of all twink sites.

Take the "multi sites" as an example.
Rainbow Revenue has http://gaymultipass.com which I would consider a megasite.
RR also has http://blackcockvirgin.com/ (which you get when you join GayMultiPass) or you can buy on your own. That imho is a niche site.

The only megasite imho that really offers value for the money is Tyler's Room. The rest are just a cluster fuck of poor content all tossed together much like I would make a salad. Even the dressing doesn't make it look good or taste better.
