It's good for a site that has a branding budget. Print is hard to convert directly to clicks and is better if you pursue it as a brand marketing strategy...
That's not to say you won't get clicks from it, it's just harder to do so.... better to approach it more with a long term brand building perspective rather than a short term source of clicks.

Exactly. We have been advertising in print since BlakeMason launched. You do make direct sales from print, but that is not the main goal. It's all about the brand.
If you have a good web strategy, then some print will give it a boost. What I am trying to say is this. Surfer sees a print ad a few times, then he sees your links on the web. He knows he has seen your site in print, but he may not be sure. The more print you run, the more he sees the name. So, he sees your link or site or whatever on the web. It's an easier sell than if he had not seen it before.
But, here is the tricky part, to brand a site is a long term commitment. The ads need to be big. 1/4 page ads just don't do a good job at branding. It needs to be done over an extended period of time to have an affect.
Use wordtracker and see how many searches that the big sites get. That's the power of the brand.
I have seen many sites drop an ad here and there and expect immediate results. You may get a little boost. Then they stop. Poor strategy.
Expect to loose money on your ads at first. But, if you wre willing to keep it going, it will work in the end.
I honestly don;t think affiliates would be converting our site at what they are if we were not dropping a ton of money a month in advertising.
It's REALLY hard to measure the direct result. But, in the long term you will know if it's working.
My advice: If you have a lot of affiliate links and your product has good web exposure, then I would start a branding campaign. If you don't have good web exposure, then i would work on that first. The branding campaign will give your web exposure more power.
