View Full Version : Hosting outside of the US

I am interested in moving my site to a host located outside of the US. Canada would be preferable to deliver fast speeds back to the US. But I would consider the UK/Europe as well.
My site is not a heavy bandwith user (yet) but soon that could change. So I want to plan for a larger site and heavier load. I have no complaints about my current US host but some of my content could be seen as objectionable by some hosts (staged agressive scenes). Some of my marketers have advised that I should look to move out of the US. All of my research so far points back to well priced hosts in the US.
If you have any suggestions or comments on this issue I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

If you're a US citizen, and considering hosting content outside the US to avoid running afoul of US law, don't bother. The Feds will take one look, figure out what's going on, and bust you. You're better off making your products compliant with US law unless you plan on moving yourself and all of your business operations physically outside the US... and even then, if you're providing services to US citizens, th US could seek to come after you.
If the above isn't the case, in general, I've found that non-US bandwidth is more expensive than in the US. You can check with Luke at chilihost.nl, he has some good deals.

Okay. Yes.. I live in Australia. And I have found non-US bandwith more expensive (with a few exceptions which seem too cheap to trust).
I will check out chilihost.

i have a good friend who is very happy at exmasters, and has been there for years. they have u.s. and eu servers, so if you go with them, be sure and let them know you are looking for eu.
and of course, we all know luke at chili, so both are good options to check!

exmasters looks quite good. I've just dropped them a sales enquiry.
It looks like I could be venturing off shared hosting to dedicated hosting for the first time.
Does anyone have an email address for "Luke" at chilihost?

Ben,
We offer Netherlands-based servers from € 240/mo. Our Netherlands servers use 100% teir1 bandwidth (no cogent) to ensure fast network speeds and low latency, plus all our servers are backed by the award winning NationalNet technical crew, including 24x7 web and phone support that has an average response time of 3 minutes! Hit me up on sales@chilihost.com or luke@nationalnet.com and we can chat about specific pricing for your needs.
cheers,
Luke

Oh, mate, one other thing - the techies are all skilled, meaning that when you enter a ticket at 10am in Melbourne, you don't have to wait till its morning again in the USA ;)

I can vouch for Luke and the NatNet guys. I've been using the Netherlands servers for a couple of years now with no problems to speak of. And the tech guys are amazing. I've literally seen two and three minute response times to tech tickets. I'd hate to say they're standard (in case they take 5 or 10 minutes) but these guys are quick.

I can only agree with what has been said already. Good non-US hosting tends to be hard to find and more expensive. One of several hosting accounts I have is with Exmasters and have been with them for about six months with no problems. Support has been fast when I've contacted them.
