Whoever came up with personal computers deserves a medal from Satan himself or the Marquis de Sade. 666
So after upgrading the secondary computer, to a new unit, it somehow seems time to upgrade the main computer. Now there is a nice deal on a quad duo or something or other, with 4megs ram and all that bells N whistles, but it runs on Vista Premium.
The XP machine I am looking at has a bit less bells, but is the same price.
So pros & cons? Vista or XP? I am looking for speed too, and from all I hear, even Vista Sp1 won't come close to matching XP speed with sp2, and when sp3 is released, Vista will be like an old clunker chugging up a hill, so, XP? :bang:
Any major hassles with those using Vista?

I just got a new computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit and dual processors (8 cores) with 8 gigs of ram. It has 8 total hard drives (in 4 RAID0 pairs) of which 6 are 15k rpm SAS drives... so this probably isn't a fair comparison.
I tested video rendering speeds. My old computer is a dual core with a set of drives in RAID0. An 18 minute video took 2 1/2 hours to render to WMV on my old computer and only 37 minutes on my new computer. Surprisingly great results considering that the new computer can only access 4 processors and 3GB of memory since the rendering app is only 32bit.

I love vista, but needs a bit more time to be completely stable.
Maybe after a service pack or two lol.

not that many video programs or graphics programs work with vista.

You should seriously consider Linux. Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ is amazingly simple to install, and use. In the past I may have told people to consider Unix / Linux for their PC, and it was probably over their head. But, Ubuntu has totally changed that. You should at least give it a look. It can do anything Windows can do. and in a much more stable environment.

we have a vector linux pc here - it's also very friendly and stable.

Vegas Pro 8 seems to be working just fine with Vista.
I hope I didn't just jinx myself. Lol,

XP.
But if the Vista is a better deal, you can always upgrade to XP!

I love vista...I was in the vista beta and have been using it since 06. It's better than XP in everyway, once you get used to it...and as far as working with video....Like the other poster said...It's much, much better than XP IMO

"Vista, both with and without SP1, performed notably slower than XP with SP3 in the test, taking over 80 seconds to complete the test, compared to the beta SP3-enhanced XP's 35 seconds."

"We are disappointed that CPU-intensive applications such as video transcoding with XviD (DVD to XviD MPEG4) or the MainConcept H.264 Encoder performed 18% to nearly 24% slower in our standard benchmark scenarios. Both benchmarks finished much quicker under Windows XP. There aren't newer versions available, and we don't see immediate solutions to this issue."

Well after shopping around the other night, I have come to the conclusion, that computer stores suck. They simply do not know the products they are selling. One guy told me that the XP machine I was looking at couldn't use a Digital Display as XP wasn't compatible with them, and that the maximum RAM was 1meg. Yeah right, when the display model had a 24 HD panel hooked up and 4meg.

So are you still getting a VISTA machine.
Seriously, I am having issues encoding videos on Vista.

No, just got the one for the wife and if this one craps out, I'll use his and get a new one then, for now going to keep this one, maybe toss in a bit more ram, but figure that I'll wait till either Vista improves and upgrade all the machines then, or just plug along.
As I don't do video that isn't a huge issue, though for the mainstream stuff, non adult, it would be handy, the limited use of it makes the speed a non issue for us.
So no, no new machine for poor old me, just the old clunker that keeps on ticking.

most of the people i know who got a vista system got a faster, stronger computer when they got their new system as well. is your vista box the same processor and ram as your xp box?

Depends on if it was labelled "Vista CAPABLE" or "Vista READY" when they bought it. MicroSoft's in court over this, a lot of computers which shipped with Vista (or had upgrade coupons included) are capable of running only VBasic comfortably, and - as usual when someone re-writes an operating system - a lot of people got screwed.
As far as Vista vs. XP Pro -
By choice, I use a very old but very stable and proven CPU which runs XP Pro SP-1 just fine. I keep a close eye on what I install, and quite honestly even Pinnacle Studio runs fine.
If I were to make a major software change that needed a learning curve on my end, I'd probably run to a Linux solution - and avoid MicroSoft's concept of using 35% of a CPU to run the system software.
I've test-driven Vista, and can't see the benefits. Other than requiring a lot of work and relearning.

After buying this new computer, I will never buy another from a retail store or big online retailer again. Granted, I bought a high-end video workstation but some of these custom builders can do more mainstream boxes as well... and for very reasonable prices.
I bought from http://www.polywell.com/ and they walked me through every step of the procedure and made sure every component was exactly what I needed. And because they don't buy parts in big lots, you aren't stuck with last year's processors or gimpy hard drives. They have the most cutting-edge components available. And the best thing of all... the computer doesn't come pre-installed with piles of crappy trial software that you'll never use in a million years.

Yep. I am once again in agreement with our lovely co-host(ess) Basschick.
I just finished cleaning up a few laptops which run Vista for some friends. I had heard that Vista was troublesome but I had no idea how much so. Something akin to "big brother in the sky" has been incorporated into this OS. Thus making for a very difficult time installing something even as simple as AVG. I eventually got F-Prot on both machines after purchasing a few licenses and was able to clean them up. Hijackthis couldn't do a complete scan and I never did find out why.
They came with Norton (LOL-what a joke!!) installed and even it was all screwy. It couldn't update and was not doing what it's supposed to be doing. Even for it's own lack of usefullness on an XP system.
For those who partake in "passed on software", you definitely don't want to deal with Vista in my strong opinion. It simply won't let you install it.
When it comes to Windows OS's XP is the shizzle.

I have the hardest time installing ANYTHING on Vista. You literally have to sit and wait for the WHOLE program to install. You get so many "security" prompts.
