Okay....so what is the difference in what what 32 bit, 24 bit and 16 bit monitors can see? Less than 8% of our surfers have 16 or lower. Can I stop using websafe colors and get a bit more subtle with things?

16bit = 65,536 colors
24bit = 16,777,216 colors
32bit = 4.2 billion
MIT (and everyone else) says there's no breaking up and dithering across web browsers and across computer platforms with websafe colors. Guess if they say so. But I see many other colors that aren't "web-safe" that at least look OK on my screen.
Unless I'm way off, I've noticed a lot of WP sites don't always use web safe colors for various things, so neither do I. Web safe colors are rather garish. I find them hard to use exactly because they have little subtlety, too, Alex. But we went to art school, so maybe most people really don't care or notice the difference? The whole websafe thing confuses me, so personally I choose to be irresponsible and ignore it.

Well I think that sounds like a plan. Thanks Tim and Simon!

I bet most of those are handheld devices, mobiles etc. At least PCs have been shipped with 32bit as default for years.

That's a little ot, i know, but I remember back in the days when I bought my first scanner. It was 14 years ago. Some weird companies used to market scanner ad "40bit devices".
Now I wonder how many colors!
