Hi all,

Ever since I got this computer with Vista, I've been having a particular problem. When my computer is on for a long period of time, eventually it just stops recognizing my Acomdata external hard drive. I have to turn the hard drive off and on, and sometimes it'll re-recognize, but sometimes I have to restart the computer.

Windows is no help, it just says try restarting the device and if that doesn't work — replace it!

Acomdata isn't much help, they just say go to power management and never let your computer go into sleep mode.

Are there any other options to resolve this issue?

You could try rescanning for the drive. I use that when I add a external drive after I've already started the computer.

Control panel... Administrative tools... Computer management... then under storage, disc management, right click and rescan disks.

Not really a solution though from it still happening.

Never had that issue with vista, and the wife is still using vista, and hasn't had that issue at all.

My windows 7 does go into sleep mode, haven't changed the settings, but it does seem to always (knock on wood) remember when i've got the external hooked up.

I had a problem like this as well. In a few cases it said I needed to reformat my HD and asked me if I wanted to... When I got my MAC I plugged it in thinking that I would have a problem with the HD, but never got that message one time. On another note, I had another external HD that Vista kept making that sound when the HD disconnects. It would happen about 3-5 an hour. That HD works fine on the MAC as well. I think there is something with Vista that makes external HDs "screwy". That boing noise was driving me bananas...
