Mailing list: script suggestion

Hey there,
I'm looking for a little suggestion: we have to setup a mailing list that can handle 1500-2000 subscriptions. What do you suggest? Internal (hosted by us) script or external one?

I've used several different services & self-hosted scripts over the years. I now use PHPList and am quite happy with it.
