From ICM's website:

"Who Will Run the .xxx TLD?
ICM Registry will operate the registry. ICM Registry is a financially stable and completely independent entity with no affiliation, current or historic, with the adult entertainment industry. As registry operator, ICM Registry will provide management, supporting infrastructure and back-end functionality.
The International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR) is the sponsoring organization. IFFOR is a non-profit entity that will serve as the policy-making body for the .xxx TLD. IFFOR is and will remain independent from ICM Registry and will have its own board of directors."

Stewart Lawley and his board of directors plan on being the policy-making body for all of the adult companies on .xxx. But, as he acknowledges, they have absolutely not affiliation with adult. So, non-adult people believe that they should have the right to establish the policies for the adult business owners.

What's new.

If this were to happen, is it likely that exisiting adult dot coms (etc) will have the right to claim the dot xxx domains? If not then it's going to be a very unpleasant move.

And a very messy one as well.

If you have a .com and some one else has a .net, who gets the .xxx?

the problem you touch on there is exactly why this will never ever work...

on top of that you dont really need a "porno" domain to run a porn site, just take a look at some of the more funny 4-5 letter domains out there that are huge.

And then there's the whole issue of whether or not this is an attempt to ghettoize porn in one TLD.

Also, I doubt we'll see $8.95 .xxx domain registrations either. This guy has been fighting for years to get this happening, he'll want and need to recuperate his legal-fee investment.

If I remember correctly, wasn't the idea of .xxx to make the web safer to children? IE - make it easy for parents to block all porn sites? But if that is the case then they have to force every adult site down that route and I can't see that working at all.

He's charging $60 per domain. But it's ok because $10 out of every 60 goes to set up a program to do what ASACP already does. But Stewart will be running the new "protect the kids" program.

the thing is he could have easily run the kid protection part without the .XXX tld at all.

What kills me is that this fool doesn't even realize just how good the filtering software already a part of the engines and browsers already is.

When was the last time you searched for something that was not porn and got a porn return? It just doesn't happen anymore... the searcher has to ask for it.

And, with RTA labelling getting built into all the browsers and the parental monitoring software, this is moot.

Unfortunately, this guy has obviously staked his reputation at his local evangelist church on making this happen...

And, would it have any pull outside the US?
If everyone simply moved offshore, would they be able to force off the .com?

It's an interesting thought.

i've emailed with him back and forth a while back. at a guess, i'd say his interest is purely commercial.

btw, i believe he's not actually in the u.s.

I'm pretty sure icmregistry.com was located in Toronto, but I see that their International Foundation for Online Responsibility is in Washington DC.
