The Chinese use the lunar calendar for celebratory events which includes the New Year. This falls somewhere between late January and early February. The cycle of twelve animal signs originates from Chinese tradition as a way of naming the years. The animals
follow one another in an established order and are replicated every twelve years. The rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig are the twelve animal signs. Every animal has particular characteristics and people born in a specific year are believed to take on these characteristics.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, which commences on February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011. The Tiger is the third sign in the Chinese Zodiac
cycle, and it is a sign of bravery. This courageous and fiery fighter is admired by the ancient Chinese as the sign that keeps away the three main tragedies of a household. These are fire, thieves and ghosts

Happy New Year and Happy Valentines Day!

What "the year of..." will be like for you also depends on what year you were born and so forth.

Chinese astrology has some parallels with western astrology but really it is constructed differently. It's based on Chinese philosophy and folklore rather the planetary configurations that we usually think of as "astrology." The name to call it depends on who and what religion ruled China when. So you'll see it called Taoist astrology, which is really where it started, Buddhist, and so on. Probably "Chinese astrology" is safest because it's really about the Chinese culture.

Taoist Astrology by "Susan Levitt with Jean Tang," Destiny Books, 1997, is easy to read and fairly comprehensive. You can find out what year you were born under, and each sign has five different variations (and more). It also gives a brief description of compatibilities, and what the year of whatever will be like for your sign. If anyone is interested but doesn't want to get the book, I can look up your info (free, Chinese astrology is not a business for me) as long as you take it with a grain of salt. You'll need to provide the day, month and year of your birth.

Western astrology is probably far more accurate. In terms of prediction (not personality description), Vedic (Hindu) astrology from Indian traditions has a reputation of being the most accurate. Both Western and Vedic astrology are based on mathematics and planetary positions, not the philosophical traditions of China. And all of it is to be taken with a few more grains of salt.
