I'm specifically referring to the kind on lavender lounge that is a small window that pops up when first reaching the site. It's not huge and the site is visible around it. But you have to click enter or leave to get rid of it. Interesting solution to the warning page in my opinion. Also gets rid of major nuisances and waste of space designing into the page of the site.

Does this reduce the amount of visitors to the site/sales?

I used the LL example because I think it's well done, not bright white. But I meant overall any kind of such pop up warnings that do not cover the whole site.

Also, I would think with pop-up blockers, this would be defeated, or do they not block this?

I went to LL and the warning did not load for me in Firefox. I had to open the site in MSIE to see it... Further, I was able to click and do things without agreeing or getting rid of it... and at my resolution, it did not cover anything so there was no great need for me to agree and enter. I'd say its a very bad example of a lightbox warning.

If it is to have purpose, you really need a lightbox script that will cover the page with a mostly transparent png so that the page can be seen dulled a bit but the warning is vibrant and must be clicked to continue.

Thanks, that's important info. Maybe it's not the right thing for me.

Just google lightbox script and I'm sure some good alternatives will come up. :)

Just a reminder, warning pages are voluntary, there is no law requiring it.

I patterned it after another site that used a pop-up warning, but when I checked today, they don't use either anymore.

My programmer found the script somewhere, I honestly haven't put a lot of thought into it other than it appears too far to the right of the page.

I've been told that warning pages lose a significant amount of traffic, so it's better to get right to the meat of the site asap.

i never liked warning popups. they don't pop up in some browers, and often allow one to view hardcore content in the background. also some pop up after the first page loads.

besides, warning pages give you a chance to bring more search engine traffic if you have some good text, or to trade links without cluttering up your content pages.

We use a popup warning page on some of our sites like this:

http://www.gaypornsitetours.com/

It covers the whole screen and is dark somewhat to prevent seeing hardcore content.

And its better not to have a warning page for seo. Unless you make a good one, but better to just get to the real content.

I think I'll go back to my original idea of a small warning blurb on the the very top of the far right sidebar. Not conspicuous but still there at the top. I guess my compromise between it all. I know it's not required but think having something would be better than nothing.
So is my present thinking. lol

I hate popups myself actually.
