View Full Version : What would you do about a racist username?

Im totally confused about what to do.
I have a black member of my site and he calls himself "N____r boy".
He's black and has a fetish for white guys calling him n____r.
For me personally it doesn't bother me because I feel that he's black so he can call himself anything he wants, and Im white so I dont have the right to say anything about it.
And I believe in freedom of expression and speech and feel anyone can call themselves anything they want to.
On the other hand it makes me feel icky to have racist stuff on my site in general.
I've banned white guys for using the N word on my site.
So what would you do?

well I agree with you on the freedom of expression, and of course many words can be rascist when used in the wrong way.
However, I would probably change it, and I would probably also ban various words from being used in usernames. It will possibly save you a headache later if someone takes exception to it, and you perhaps want to avoid setting a precedent, even if this one is 'good natured'.

i'd ban hate language in general in my terms and conditions and again on the page where members create their user names.
I'm tired of our ultra PC society. Isn't it only "hate" language if used in a certain context.
If someone who is gay calls me a silly fag, it rolls right off. If I'm called faggot by a stranger walking down the street, that's hate language.

I agree with Seth. There's nothing inherently good or bad about the word "nigger", it's the context that gives it either a positive or negative connotation.
For example, "gay" can be both complimentary and derogatory, depending on the context in which it's used, but I'd never consider banning it from user names.
Likewise, it doesn't sound like your user is using the word "nigger" in the context of hate and therefore I don't think you should ban his user name for this reason.
I am English Caucasian however, if I were African American I may well have a completely different view of the matter!

I think the word "nigger" isn't used to hurt people in this case, so I wouldn't change it.
Maybe I don't get any negative associations with the word "nigger", because English isn't my first language. For me it would be the same as having "indian boy", "jew boy" or "asian boy" as a nickname.

I mean... every so often I like to be called "faggot." It's all fantasy and we don't make porn to appeal to the sensibilities of Aunt Aggie.

It's only "racist" if used in a certain context.
Pointing the finger and labeling "racist" is way over the top in American culture thanks in part to minority pot stirrers and opportunists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.
If a person of minority wants to be called a derogatory term as part of a fantasy or fetish then that's their prerogative, who are you to try and stop or censor them?
