ok, strange topic, but i was just amazed at this one. My printer, a Canon MX700, told me that it was out of yellow ink just over 3 months ago. I found an option to override the warning and continue printing. The printer finally stopped printing today due to no more ink. But I must have printed over 200 pages between then and today.

So next time your printer begs for a new ink cartridge, override it and keep printing and save some cash and the environment too ;)

Not so strange, been using one of those bypass things, as the printer companies try to cheat, getting you to buy refills, when there is still ink. Just like new printers don't come with a full standard cartridge, but a demo type, that has much less ink in it. Or so the HP guy told us. :grrr:

I know this is a way these companies get you to buy more ink... My printer a HP Photosmart 6100 will display a message to replace ink cartridge or your printers health is at risk... I can overright it for about 100 pages, at that point it wont let you print anymore.

Good Tip Luke!

Does this mean you are saving up to buy more sites Luke ;-)
They say printer ink is dearer than gold, weight for weight.
My everyday printer cost less than half a replacement cartridge - figure that.

I hate the way they rip us off, the copier folk. The wife got himself an ink refill kit, that works for his printer, and what is worse, he gets more pages per cartridge refill, than from a brand new one, and yes, the quality is just as good, and is it ever cheaper than buying a new one.

I solved this problem years ago.. I went to a laser printer. They are fast, incredibly cheap to operate, and the ink is permanent. When it comes time to buy new toner, shop online. I just about got a life-time supply for my Brother printer for around $50. Brother uses a unique system where the toner cartridge is NOT an all-in-one like HP's. So just pop in a new $12 refill and keep printing another 10,000+ copies!

Most people are shocked as a photographer, I don't even own a color ink jet printer. I do have a color laser that sits in the corner to collect dust too.

Good tip. For everyday photo printing I use a Canon pixma mp750. The other day it said I needed yellow and a black. I went to the local Staples store and found their prices went up on ink by almost 30%. It ended up costing me $40 for just two ink cartridges. I will have to remember this tip before I buy ink next time.

Is the option available on all (or most) printers ?

I actually threw out my printer last month because I was so fed up it would not print when one of the cartridges was near empty, even when it wasn't - I don't print a lot so sometimes they would dry up.

Anyway, I am looking to buy a new printer now, and definitely would be on the lookout for this option.

So how does one override the "you are out of ink message"?

I have an HP4215 all-in-one

Not sure how Luke does his, we bought a gizmo from Staples, that recodes the electronic strip to tell the printer the cartridge isn't empty. Cost us I think $20, so far saved us hundreds. Wifey does a lot of printing out of pictures. whistle
