yesterday i lost my cell phone. i was amazed and dismayed to discover just how much i use it for in my daily life. our only land line is on the fax machine, so i was unable to call out except on the fax machine, which has awful sound and is stuck close to a wall. the last year's phone numbers were only in my phone. notes, songs i wrote, reminders - all in my phone only. i had a bunch of games, photos and videos that i never bothered to move to my computer all gone.

i had to go buy a replacement, and what a relief it is! now it's time to start backing stuff up like phone numbers, and from now on copy all notes and songs onto my computer.

so... how much do you rely on your cell phone? do you save everything you have on it?

Frankly, I hardly even use it that much. For me, it is more of an emergency phone, or a way to find the wife when we are out shopping. I mean he does tend to wander, especially if something hot walks by. 666 though he does let me know, so I can drool along with him lol

Sorry to hear about your phone.
I'm the same way and use my phone as a phone and a PDA. All of my contacts phone numbers and even some addresses are in there.

A few weeks ago I bought an I-Phone. The addressbook and virtually everything on the hard drive of the phone can be synched with my computer or even stored on a remote server. (just in case)

There are probably other phones and services as well on networks better than ATT. Just a matter of what you want and need.

my phone syncs with my computer. it just never occurred to me to bother. i wouldn't be surprised if it can all be stored - i never bothered to read the manual *lol*

Sorry to hear that Basschick. I did that once too and didn't read the manual and didn't have stuff backed up. All the best with getting everything back.

Yeah, me too. I used to use it a lot. I can't get out of the contract though and they don't have a stripped down plan I can downgrade to. So no matter whether I use it or not, the fees are the same. LOL. Oh well. It's there for emergency if I need it. Comes in handy for keeping in touch with significant others more than anything.

The last 1/2 years that I lived in the USA we didn't even have a land line phone...only cell phones so YES I can understand your lose certainly!

Now we have cells only once again in Argentina as land lines are not needed any longer.

Best of luck getting your data back!

I actually took the time to write out the names and phone numbers in my cell phone's address book, then put that list in a drawer. I am sure that guarantees I will never lose my phone!

I'm part of the 10% population that doesn't have a cellphone.

I don't have a cellphone, I've never purchased a cellphone, and I have no interest in having a cellphone. I really don't need the hassle to pay for minutes and to be stuck with one number, one plan and one contract. If I need to make a phone call, I find a pay phone.

That sucks that you lost it. However my advice is even if you can get ahold of the person with it is to avoid it. I had a friend lose one, and he contacted the people VIA text message to go pick it up.

When he did, he was robbed at knife point, they even stole his car keys from him. Sadly he has their name, number, their tag # and everything. The police still say they don't have enough evidence.

I learned from that when your cell is stolen / taken whatever, to not go and try to get it back. A cell phone is much cheaper to replace than the emotional damage.

Wow. They still have pay phones in Toronto? LOL. I grew up there and they were all over the place then. Since about 1995, I haven't seen one here in the Lower Mainland of BC. I'm sure there are probably a few, but I've never seen one. They took them out mostly due to the damage that was being caused by people breaking into them. Of course, I would imagine the cell phone companies played a large part in their removal as well. It was never mentioned in the media at all. Just within about 6 months time they were all gone.

I've seen some recent news though that some areas want to bring them back for people who are stranded in more remote areas and where cell phone reception is not the greatest or doesn't exist. Also, store owners are getting pissed off when customers want to use their phone if their vehicles break down etc.

I can't say I really like cell phones that much. I watch my fiance's young family members on them while social functions are going on and sometimes yes, while they are driving. Even though there's a large fine for it now. It disturbs me. You've got a room full of people you could be talking with and you're yakking or texting with someone miles away on your phone. Technology sure can be a doubled-edged sword sometimes.

On the other hand, they are a great emergency tool and I personally know of people's lives being saved due to having one. They're here to stay I would imagine. I own one, but don't use it unless I go out. Which isn't often due to working a lot. Which reminds me, my monthly payment is late. LOL. Uh oh.

I used to be a slave to my mobile phone / pda when I was in the hosting game. But since getting out of that, I only have an extremely simple mobile phone with a very limited list of numbers. I can lose it and not really care...my laptop, on the other hand....

I was dedicated to keeping a simple phone that just made calls, until my iphone rennaisance a few months back. Now I couldn't do without it, and if you sync it every time you charge it, you cannot lose anything apart from one days worth.
