Anyone been brave enough to upgrade their old Vista to Windows 7 yet?

Got the new shiny Windows 7 box delivered yesterday.. still wrapped, unopened.. I just can't make myself even think about upgrading.

I don't think I shall bother on this computer, will just wait until I bin this and get a new one - it does look pretty good though and the reviews do seem mostly positive.

I'm still debating over it. My vista works perfectly fine since I bought a new computer, so I'll probably stick with it for another year.

is it backward compatible? i'm still on XP, partly at least because several of my current programs that i like to use won't work with vista.

i might try it on one computer and see if it works with everything before jumping in on both.

My Vista Ultimate 64 works perfect too, not switching yet.

unfortunately the upgrade path from XP -> Win7 is via a total disk format, so there is no way I will be upgrading until they get a better migration tool released.

Vista is working pretty good for me and I haven't seen anything on Win7 that really impresses me or makes me want to upgrade.

Have been using the Win7 RC for a bit now, enjoy it and will upgrade, though it will be the last time I'll ever try out their RC projects. Unlike everyone else, one who tests the RC has to buy the full version, do a clean install, which is like, a slap in the face really. You put your stuff at risk, to make their system better, and in return you wind up having to pay a higher price for the finished product. :grrr:

Sounds more like a Gay Gravy type operation. :bang:

Well if that's the case, I won't be upgrading myself until there's something better. Thanks for the info Luke.

Gaystoryman - You always put a smile on my face my friend! lol

Yep, since XP works great, not worth upgrading yet.

I upgraded my smaller laptop and it was very easy to do from Vista to Win 7, it also seems that everything should work it migrates any programs over and keeps all the files. Not tested it much yet though but so far all good. Surprised actually. It did take a long time though.

There's a relatively simplistic explanation of the differences here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8315298.stm

Pretty much outlines what Luke was saying about going from xp to windows 7.

My main fear is if windows 7 will be compatible with all my current programs such as Pinnacle, EZdrm packager, windows media encoder, etc.

Compatibility with windows vista was a nightmare, but I finally could get everything working. I'm terrified of going through all that painful process again.

I don't know if any of you uses Windows Media Encoder, it's by far the best encoder to get superb quality in your videos. However, Microsoft is sooooooo idiot that its own encoder is not compatible with its own OS, Vista. And they do have a patch to make it work, but the patch is not even mentioned in the download page, I had to google to find it.

This is the kind of things that will make me wait at least 6 months to jump in 7.

I did a pre-order, and Amazon has notified me it is on its way. I am not going to attempt an upgrade, but set it up on an entirely different computer as a new install. I have far too much at risk on my current system to do it any other way.

My next Windows upgrade is going to be to a Mac.

I am sick of Windows!

Historically, I've never had a great deal of luck with upgrades between Windows OS versions and I can't see a enough difference between Vista Ultimate, my current OS, and Windows 7 (apart from usability improvements) to encourage me to switch over now.

I'll move to 7 when I next upgrade machines but since my current PC is in excellent condition, I'm in no hurry.

If I was still on XP, I'd move over with a new machine now, simply because XP is horribly slow compared to the modern Windows. A lot of people on XP didn't move to Vista due to compatibility issues with existing software (as experienced by Jorgebianco). Microsoft say this isn't an issue with 7 as, if a program isn't inherently compatible, they've created a way for it to run using XP emulation in the background.

I think the media's current scaremongering (after comments from Which?) that people should "wait for a year" before switching to Windows 7, due to potential security holes in the OS is a tad unfair, especially considering the much increased real-world usability testing MS did with the product this time around.

On the whole I look forward to Windows 7 but I don't feel there's any rush for people already using Vista. Unless, Gaydemon_jr, you'd like to give more detail as to why you're so happy with it?

Hear hear!! Thats what I call a real upgrade. And at $40.00 (taxes in) for Snow Leopard its probably the most affordable commercial OS out there.

Did I mention that there is no formatting of drives? and the only backward compatible issues are if you are using ancient software that requires Rosetta... After the abortion that was Vista, I dont know why anyone would stick with Windows

My next Windows upgrade is going to be to a Mac.

It's also my main fear. Upgrading and then have all my programs not working would suck :(
